Not a HIPAA violation, but it is illegal. Can't remember which law it falls under but you have the right to refuse treatment of any kind and must be included in decisions, unless medically unable to do so, at which point your POA or nearest relative is found to do so.

What kind of hospital was he in, or what section of a "regular" hospital was he in? Usually, when Drs make this determination, it's in a mental ward or an actual mental hospital. If they see any kind of dissent among the patients, they will just declare them medically unfit to make their own decisions and do it anyway. Seems to me, that's the situation this man was in. I heard "we need to do a work up on you".... which sounds more like maybe they were trying to draw blood for bloodwork? worked in some ERs… sometimes the police bring in mental patients that haven’t been arrested. and sometimes ppl that have been taken into custody who got injured (or claim injury) and they have to go to the ER before jail. not sure if the latter are arrested first, i’d assume yes.
