This is one time that I regret how deeply conditioned men are to not hit women. This woman both initiated a conflict and assaulted both men and then was stunned when they defended themselves and retaliated. I am a woman with traditional values and I appreciate a man for his role as protector among men's other many natural virtues. I am raising a boy and teaching him to protect women or any person in harm's way that he is able to intervene for but this is the kind of thing that really upsets me and makes me want to be sure to drill into him that he should honor and protect women and any vulnerable person "Except honey, if a woman EVER hits you first then all bets are off and you go ahead and teach her the same lesson you would teach any man who assaults you with my absolute blessing and support."

I don’t think the natural instinct of men is to punch a woman who punches them. The instinct is to push them back. If that doesn’t work, then the instinct is to catch their wrists and simply hold them still to calm them down. If they are still flailing about, spitting, biting, swinging fists, then possibly one punch. But even then most men don’t actually need to punch a woman to restrain them.
It’s also dangerous, I think, to tell boys they have permission to hit women in certain situations because at the moment in our society the laws are so biased that even if it was justified, the police and the courts won’t see it that way. It’s not really about what is fair or moral here, it’s about the best way to navigate a tyrannical bureaucratic state that applies laws differently to white men then any other race.
You're right, of course, and fleeing from or physically restraining a woman assaulting a man is the best option from a legal and maybe even a moral standpoint too. I am just sick of seeing women get away with assaulting men without a consequence because men are taught they can't hit women back.
When I see a man give back exactly what he got like what was shown in this video I just don't feel sorry for that woman at all. A shared moral code of decency only works when the men AND the women are behaving decently.
