for starters thermite isn't an "explosive" it's a exothermic reaction that uses the "oxide" in iron oxide (rust) to donate to the aluminum to allow it to burn in a metal fire... the finer mesh both of these components are in the composition the faster and more energetic it can do it's conversion. the intense heat allows the formation of molten iron left behind from the iron oxide and this molten iron is then directed onto the object you are looking to cut (or weld, it's how they do certain types of in the field train rail repairs).
it doesn't blow up unless you contain the shit out of it and even then it's not a very effective explosive, it's nowhere near HE (like dynamite or even PETN).
And the reason china used explosive on the lower floors only is because it's the most efficient way to bring a building down. they are filled with tensioned rebar cast into concrete and as soon as the concrete is busted the rebar is allowed to retract and it'll throw 50 pound chunks of concrete at ridiculous speeds straight into your face if it wants to.
if you get a building that big made from tensioned forms moving, gravity and inertia and the stored up energy in that stretched rebar will blow the building to dust and leave you with a pile of mangled twisted rebar with chunks of concrete stuck to it.
in other words... those buildings aren't "intact" at all other than the one that squatted/leaned and didn't come down (which is a MASSIVE problem which i talked about elsewhere in this thread).
