If there was a skirmish between Ukraine and Russian forces, why fight over a near-completely unpopulated nuclear disaster area? Shouldn't it amount to useless territory?
Unless... it's not, and there was a highly strategic reason for securing Chernobyl (of which we may learn about in time).
It's not really unpopulated. There are a lot of tourism spots and a lot of science happening in the area.
Kyle Hill (yes, the nerd) had been doing an ongoing Chernobyl series as a more recent reference, and toured the zone and talked about some of the research and experiments still happening there.
Are we going to learn soon that the "exclusion zone" has been completely safe for years and that's where they're hiding all their dirty secrets?
And an Olympic athletic facility?
Safe? No, not without protection. You can still enter with a guide, and research is still ongoing there.
A solid cover despite that? I could see that. Certainly something in the region even if it's not within the zone itself could be there.

Correct. It wasn't a day. It was two weeks. Olympic Chernobyl, in fact. Kind of seemed odd to me at the time, in fact. What did that have to do with anything? i thought to myself.
There was no fierce battle or any battle. They drove in and said it's ours and no you're not going to blow it up and blame Russia for it! Get fucked.
So that's where the holy grail is...

The area around the site has been safe for decades. There are pockets of radiation like the closet containing the discarded clothing of the firefighters. And the actual site of the melted core is extremely lethal.
But wouldn't it be nuts of the area around the core had actually been inert for years, and the whole sarcophagus shielding it was just a cover to conceal criminality? Considering they made a miniseries as propaganda, I wouldn't be surprised.
