My dad was in the Army in the 50's and I've heard him refer to chipped beef on toast as "shit on a shingle". This must be it's cousin, puke on a plank.
After 6 years in the Marines in WWII my dad would not allow anything with white gravy in the house. We had chipped beef, chicken and dumplings when he was away. LOL and yes he called it SOS

My Pop did six years in the NJNG before WWII and was called up in May of ‘41 for five years during the war. He liked SOS and I do too. No one else in the house did. He would make up a batch for us when everyone else went out. I will still get the fixings and make some when everyone else goes out. Nom!
His was pretty authentic, it’s just dried beef, thin sliced, cooked in white gravy. The dried beef is hard to find these days so I used sautéed fresh shaved beef. Pop was a butcher all his life and there was no such thing as military contract food service in the 1930’s so I’m sure he’d seen the inside of a mess hall kitchen more than a few times.

Veggie omelet (vomelet) is the most foul mre there is. Makes the avo toast look edible.
Do you toast over the fire? What keeps the toast from getting mushy? Are they together in same pkg?
