Are Teslas the new Cadillacs? I remember when it was common for the poorest people, who lived in shacks and otherwise had no evident wealth, would somehow have a huge Cadillac.

He said they'll be voting Democrat for a hundred years. :)

I think he may have overestimated his plan, as a lot of "those people" are leaving the plantation way before the 100 years is up.

Maybe under optimal "laboratory" settings... There was a stickie the other day that crushed the green-ness of ev's. Never charge over 80% and never discharge below 20% of capacity, otherwise degradation occurs. Cold weather dramatically reduces range. Don't park it in the sun, cause the heat will damage the batteries. Also sub zero temps are bad for lithium chemistry cells longevity. "Super" charging also stresses the cells.

Basic real world range was around 120 miles round trip. Sure you could push the limit to max, but then your battery won't last 100k

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Wtf_socialismreally 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

Degradation always occurs. "Over" charging and discharging can accelerate it, but it's always going to be the "over" due to the pressure of packing it full of more energy.

Same as any battery, and also why smartphones with fast charging only do so up to a point. It gets hot, fast because it requires more to pack it in the last ~20%.

Heat is the biggest factor, and that is more common on the high end.

Unfortunately this is one reason of many why our current battery technology is not so sustainable; they just don't last.

Within the first couple years of owning a phone for example you will have lost a lot of capacity for your battery. This suits businesses because then you'll trade it back in for a discount on a new phone you probably wouldn't have bought for another year or two. But it's bad for the environment and bad for the consumer.

TL;DR: We needed to improve energy efficiency and technologies elsewhere long before we tried to push the adoption of electrical cars, instead of throwing darts at a board with various ways of fucking everyone over.

But don't worry! Unneeded updates render usable/serviceable equipment (phones) useless after a few years anyway

Sounds to me Teslas would not be a good car to have in AZ. You have to park your car in the sun at certain places. Summer, our nights get down to the high 80s/low 90s, I wonder how that affects the battery.

I charge 100% if I know im going for a long drive. so i get 500km instead of like 420. That is really no big deal. Since there are so many superchargers, charging to 100 is useless to me. About discharging to under 20, I am not aware Teslas have that issue.

There have been people that only supercharge and they do not show any problems that people expected.

I bought a large battery AWD tesla to deal with the winter. The range loss doesn't concern me at all.

This is with the old tesla batteries. The new ones are much better and will blow people away.

Student loans should be dumped on principle. Any payments made should be returned with interest.

The loans didn't educate 95 percent of the people who used them. It's all a fraud.

– Wtf_socialismreally 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

Even in useful majors, you could use that time in a lot of professions actually being trained and working when training, while making money instead of losing it.

Essentially, if you are aiming for a specific field, hands on training and experience for that field will almost always be more valuable, and making money while you do it means that you can spend that money on necessities instead of spending all that money on schooling.

Obviously for the medical field, you need more specialized classes and more time. Higher risk to everyone around you and very important to make sure everything is done precisely the correct way with almost 0 wiggle room unless the government tells you to inject people of course.

And also for legal stuff, because our laws are so obtuse it requires many years to actually even begin to understand all of them.

They created all sorts of college majors in the past 30 years, going along with the student loan program, and because of student loans being so prevalent, the colleges kept raising their tuition along the way. Colleges are just money machines now. The economic advantages of college are limited to only a few majors now.

My son paid his off in less than two years after he graduated and got a decent job in the engineering field. He also saved enough to pay cash for a foreclosure home. He didn't spend $3 or $4 a day on Starbucks and the like. Probably didn't buy any clothes during those two years, and shared a house with a few others.

Good for him.

I was broke for the first 3 years after college. Saved everything I could, and learned to live very frugally and within my means. It forced me to have discipline.

Even now, I never carry a balance on my cc. If I can’t afford it, I don’t need it.

My younger sister, on the other hand... my parents had more money when she was going to college. She never learned that discipline. She is always in debt, and pays the minimum on her credit card. Different mindset, and she seems to be the norm.

Unless my wife buys me some article of clothing, I don't buy clothes :) I bought several shirts from a Goodwill store about 10 years ago and still have them. I consider not buying new stuff unless I really need it a victory over the Godless corporations that brainwash people into thinking they have to have the latest whatever, the best example being a new I-phone coming out every year. I paid about $250 for the laptop I use (bought 6 years ago). A few months ago the hard disk failed. I bought a solid-state hard drive for it, and the increase in speed was amazing! I don't understand the need to have something take 3 seconds instead of 4, which is what the difference between a $1500 laptop and mine seems to be.

You ignoring the pollution created by the generation of the electric power to charge the electric vehicles as well as the African children mining the cobalt and lithium used in the batteries.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2016/jan/19/children-as-young-as-seven-mining-cobalt-for-use-in-smartphones-says-amnesty

You're clearly misinformed as to what will happen to our power grid if everybody magically flipped over to electric vehicles overnight. Picture rolling brownouts and people unable to charge their vehicles unless they have solar power.

I'm not against electric vehicles. I'm against the government artificially raising the price of fuel to force them upon us, especially before the technology has sufficiently matured and before our electric grid can handle it.

"Electricity is infinite and free"? Where is it free? I just paid my electric bill today, and it wasn't one bit free. No matter how electricity is generated in the future, you will have to pay for it.

It doesn't matter if electric cars are adopted slowly. The supply of electricity to charge the batteries will just not be sufficient. The windmills cost more in energy that they will produce in their short usable lifetime. And then they go into landfills, because they can't be recycled. It's a similar story with solar panels.

The car batteries cost a fortune and don't last nearly as long as advertised. Then they have to go in the landfill as well.

You can't park an electric car outside in the sun. You can't let it get very cold. If I bought one today, I couldn't go anywhere, as there aren't sufficient charging stations. My entire county only has two charging stations. A few dozen cars would keep a line at both of them. Home charging stations are dangerous. I've read of a number of houses burning down because of them. The home charging station is another expense.

If you don't want to buy coolants, just get an old Volkswagen that's air cooled.

I don't see anything but negatives on having an electric car.

You will have to pay for it because you don't have the capacity to generate large quantities of energy. The companies that do will always charge for it.

300 miles? That's not much of a vacation. I drive more than that in a day when I'm on vacation. But I wouldn't be able to with an electric car.

There is somewhat of a scarcity of coal, gas, and oil for generating electricity. We don't have the land for windmills, without going communist and confiscating it. They also have a negative return. The same goes for solar. It's a losing deal, if it weren't for government (taxpayer) subsidies.

Yes, you can "make electricity" with a home made generator, but you have to physically turn that generator. That takes a force from somewhere. There's not enough wind or water to do it. You can crank it yourself, but you'll get tired fast. Also, you can't get around the laws of physics.

You seem to be blinded by how much you had to spend on the Tesla. Just wait until you have to replace the battery, or start getting fewer miles on a charge. Or you get stuck on the interstate in a winter storm.

But who said everyone should adopt electric overnight?

Joe Biden did by signing Executive Order 13990. Price of gas is going to go up even higher.
