They can't be cycled interchangeably on a gas operated firearm. It would stop cycling after the first blank if it were even possible. That's because you need a special adapter at the muzzle brake to cycle the bolt carrier if you're firing blanks. If you have this adapter installed you cannot use standard ammunition unless you want your barrel/face to explode.

I've seen the wounds of 5.56 of point blank on human heads and the wounds are often catastrophic. Very often leading to severe damage to the skull blowing most of the face off. Also brain matter would be all over the floor and jaws would often be dislocated. Rifle rounds on heads are absolutely devastating.
