Food for my soul. Oh I miss this . Lived in Istanbul for 18 months 5 years ago and nearly everyone had this sentiment. Cat food, dog food, treats even, and when it was cold or snowing big cardboard homes filled with blankets for the dogs and purpose built cat havens. The street dogs and cats belonged to everyone and I guess we had our favorites.

Exactly. At least, trap, neuter/spay, release. If possible. My area has a program for cats. If you trap them the local humane society will fix them and release them back in your area free of charge.

Hubby was in NO after Katrina and was there a month. The pet dogs ran in packs and were very hungry. They revert to be wild very quickly. He told me one night they were out patrolling in some neighborhood and they saw a pack of dogs chasing a donkey. All kinds - hounds, toy dogs, shepherds. He said it was surreal. They started carrying big bags of dog food with them and would tear open the bags so they could eat. Made it safer for everyone.

And, Turkey is a place where dogs are abandoned regularly and treated appallingly. This person is unusual in that country.

Spent several months In Istanbul awhile back and saw a LOT of cats but never saw a dog. Saw a lot of people feeding cats. They really take care of stray cats over there but dogs..not so much.
