i dunno. the decisions and furor in germany was all started after Fukushima / Daiichi. They decided the risk was so much worse than they were willing to take on in terms of that a meltdown would obliterate their economy almost entirely.

There's a good amount of waste, and it gets stored in heavy metal containers on site. Important to note that the water that is used to cool the plants are not radioactive and never touch nuclear material either, so aside from the waste that we have to figure out future disposal for, it's totally clean and it doesn't eject into the atmosphere or leech into water supplies
The left's always point to nuclear waste as their reason for being against it. I wonder where they think the nuclear material came from in the first place.
It's because their idea of nuclear waste comes from Chernobyl and cartoon caricatures of evil corporations illegally dumping radioactive material into rivers and lakes.
Of course that still happens with other chemicals and toxic shit, but they never seem to bitch about that.
I thought pebble bed reactors or thorium reactors can run and not melt down. Nuclear power can solve a lot with very little risk, the governments want the plutonium for weapons and therein lies the risk.

Germany's main strength was that they were a manufacturing power-house. The key word is "were".
If Germany is intent on relying on Wind and Solar Power (both are intermittent sources and unreliable for 24/7 electricity)... and reliance on Russian oil and gas, then Germany may not be a manufacturing power for long.
India is emerging as a new manufacturing power-house to rival China. There are a LOT of nations with an increasingly educated cheap labor force that will step in... and THEY will use coal power, oil and gas from any source... and they will out-compete Germany in manufacturing.
Germany only has a few years left to get it's act together. If they don't... then the manufacturing will move overseas. At that point, Germany becomes a nation in rapid decline (which is already showing in their stupid decision making).
