I'll bet you that it's that they didn't give up their guns per say, but that the politicians outlawed it without consultation and tge ppl are just stuck with those laws. Which is why "gun crime" can be high in "gun free" countries
I can own guns on very much the same terms as most of the US can.
I think one big problem in Europe is that no one knows the actual rights. I never knew about 20% of the population of my country owns a firearm. No one talks about it. When I researched it and asked coworkers, a few of them turned out to have firearms and gave me tips on how to get one too.
Also, you can own a shotgun without any problems. You only have to keep it stored in a safe place.
You don't need to go outside the US to find your answer. They are pulling the same thing here. Scaring people into believing that guns make them less safe. We must outlaw them so that nobody can use them to harm us.
Look at London and their relatively new ban on knives. Same thing. Fear.
It is because our country is (supposed to be) run by us and it was that way from its beginning. Each individual had responsibility for themselves and for each other.
In New Zealand we were such a peaceful country, with a low cost of living and a Government who acted for the people (no longer) so the idea of owning guns never crossed our minds.Only farmers and those few city people had guns for sport , duck shooting, and pest control in the rural areas, possums rabbits etc.. Today I am not sure who would still possess guns here.
In the UK we have a right to own shotguns, but we need a shotgun certificate first which is issued by the Police.
They are supposed to allow you to have one unless they have a good reason for you not to (criminal background/mentally unstable etc.).
For firearms, we need to have a good reason to have them and then we apply for a firearms certificate. Each weapon takes up a 'slot' on the certificate, and a suppressor takes up a slot on its own for some reason.
Yes indeed on the UK the estimate on shotgun licence holders is about 1 million. With many also having a licence for rifles, fox, deer etc.
A good friend also owns and is licensed for an AR15 and various others.
