It is arguably good for a financial market and GDP among a handful of traditionally givens if building ones nation is a goal. Obviously a balance that manages the downsides as much as it benefits from the upsides would be the ideal. Unfortunately in America at least, conspicuous consumption is the name of the game. It was a drab lifestyle and it certainly didn't help that people could see the corruption going on around them. If you had the right party connections, you had access to all sorts of extras - shopping in the better stores, being able to own a car etc.

Any form of collectivism has to fail. It's like that saying "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link". If that "weakest link" is a person or group of people who set out to paint themselves as weak- meaning that they don't want to do anything and want everything done for them - others in the chain will notice and will gradually stop putting effort in. Why bother doing your best when you can see others doing nothing and still getting the same rewards that you do?

Made even simpler. Present a piece of candy to 2 children. Ask one to do chores and the other to sit there and do nothing. When the chores are done, give the candy to the idle child. See what happens.

I like this one too, I think I'll use it, but modify it slightly. At the end, the candy bar is cut in half and each kid gets half.
