As a teacher, if a student ever physically assaulted me I would go straight to the police department and file charges against the student and their parent. Regardless of what measures the administration might take, this type of assault should be dealt with the same as it would be outside of the classroom in society. It is high time that children learn that their actions have serious repercussions and consequences.
I've actually begun training myself out of classroom teaching and into curriculum design because of a rise in incidents and happenings like this. It will get worse before it gets better. I don't want to leave education entirely, as I still believe that it is what I am meant to be doing with my life, and because I believe post Great Awakening we are going to need high quality teachers and scholars to help get humanity back on track.
My daughter in law is a principal at Texas junior high - she was recently offered a position ( less pay) as administrator of district issues ( as seen in video )— big nope cause hers is a rural based small town school and she is well loved/ respected

We would not put up with them smoking crack in class, but this is just as destructive and disruptive. That being said, my husband teaches at a school 10 minutes down the road and they do not have this problem at all. Respect for authority and behavior are cultural aspects that build, or destroy, a community.
Students and their parents sign a Student Handbook at the beginning of each year (at least where I'm from).
Its less an issue of the confiscation, and more an issue of whether the student or their parent wish to risk suspension and possible expulsion for refusal to cooperate with and adhere to the rules set forth in the handbook.
Most school handbooks are quite clear about the use of electronic devices in the classroom, and of the teacher's authority to confiscate said items in the classroom. If students disobey these rules, they are nullifying the contract between the school and the student / parent.
The argument of "its the students property" does not fly in a classroom environment. Students are there to learn, not to tweet, film the classroom, post to tik tok, etc. It becomes a safety concern at that point. There are students who are not allowed to be filmed on school grounds per the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) guidelines. Students who bring their phones to class are violating the rights of other students not to be put on camera on school grounds.
This is why we have students who are behaving like goblins in the classroom. Their actions are defended and justified by people who do not understand the field of education. Parents refuse to discipline their children, and teachers / admin have their hands tied on the matter now as well. The students understand this dynamic, and believe they have the right to disregard and ignore the authority of the teacher or educator in the classroom.
The result is that no learning is permitted to occur in our nation's schools because there is always an excuse for why children are behaving like animals. The end result is our nation in perpetual decline while counties like Russia and China are producing students who are capable of calculus and trigonometry while our students can't even manage to tie their shoes.
The other issue is that students are forced into "education" and so was the student forced or coerced into the agreement. Is she truly there voluntarily? And of course, her age plays into it too is she 18?
I do agree that there should be other avenues for education beyond the classroom. Our education system is totally broken on all levels, and there absolutely should be an avenue to have children engage in a trade or an internship / apprentice if they do not desire a classroom structure.
At a fundamental level though, our children absolutely must be given structure and must be taught to respect authority figures and adults in their lives. We are raising a generation of students who believe it is appropriate to tell a police officer to "fuck off, " leading to incidents of unnecessary arrests, resisting arrests, and jail time for what should have been a simple traffic ticket. These behaviors start at a young age, and develop into destructive personalities that follow these children into adult hood.
Much must change post Great Awakening, and the first thing that we need to bring back is respect and honor for adults, parents, and authority figures within a community. Children should not be encouraged to disrespect others.
You should be able to tell a cop to fuck off or say "fuck you" without any repercussions.

I agree that freedom of speech should be protected to a point, but we should not be encouraging our children to grow up to be dicks to everyone they meet simply because they can. A rebel spirit can be a force of great good, but to treat parents, teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and other community members with absolute contempt and distain and with no semblance of respect or honor for their position is to be encouraging the decline of our nation.
We don't want a Demolition Man future where fines are handed out for swearing, but we also don't want a Mad Max future where gangs of thugs are running amok in our streets, terrorizing citizens. We want to return to the American Dream where there is equal justice under the law, and a respect for that law. That respect begins at a very young age.
