Ok, think through with me, this is actually pretty simple.
So historically when the middle east flairs up, there is a story or narrative to go with it. Something to bind the action together. Like any good action movie, even Rambo and Predator had a storyline that kept it together.
For some reason, all this conflict has is what, Hamas hate Israel??? And we're supposed to think that is justification for them to send hundreds/thousands on a suicide attack, knowing full well the backlash for such a thing?
Has anyone from Hammas stated what the objective was? Revenge for their leaders death? The death of his brother? Attack to release prisoners? Someone made a bad batch of Hummus? Anything?
Why would seemingly intelligent terrorist operatives perform a raid with crap for support, and no real objective other than suicide by lead poisoning and for their homeland to be glassed?
I mean yeah, Israel. But in my mind do they have to have a reason? Well yeah, actually. This isn't some craptastic phone app with lots of action, good graphics and no plot whatsoever. Makes no sense to me.
Has anyone release a video, like in the 80s and 90s? At least then they knew to release some sketchy dudes in the desert with AKs shooting a reporter, or saying scripted lines about infidels or capatilist pigs.
Its like their writers took the day off but the director still called for places, and then action.

I have read that it was to stop the Israeli Saudi agreement that both countries were about to sign. That agreement would establish official govt interactions between the 2 countries and it did NOT include any requirement that Israel recognize Palestine or palestinian lands. It was the death to the 2 state idea. If saudi recognized this, who would be next? Something had to be done. So now 2 days into the fighting Saudi backed out of the agreement. Possible cause or not.
Best explanation I've heard yet, albeit not a great one. Though I must admit I'm not very well versed on the politics of the region and the impact a Hamas attack may have on such an agreement illudes me, as well as the reason SA would back out of an arrangement like that because of an attack.

One of the best ideas yet, and I personally lean to this being the most likely real reason for the attack. Occam's razor would certainly prove this out.

I only have second hand info, so take as you will. My mom's decades old friend has a daughter over there, active IDF squad leader, so the story comes from that source.
They were on patrol with reinforcements (sounded like two squads, about 20 guys & gals) in their security sector and realized what was happening. Took up positions and nailed them as they came out.
It was a gang rush that ended up with a pile of 50 of em all around, and the IDF troops only had minor skuffs & bruises.

The writers strike has nothing to do with this. There are plenty of “non union” writers in the world. And besides, these types of scripts you’re talking about don’t get processed through the same system, i.e., the “studio system.” This is all behind closed doors, with cash drops, if that. It could be as simple as two factions in Israel, duking it out for control (Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau). One backed by the Deep State, one backed by the White Hats. Sort of like just narrowing down the DS options until they're fully backed into a corner.
I think part of it is also that they can't counter what happens on the internet. Every "plot line" that goes out is analyzed in detail so they can't really fake things in a way that everyone will believe. You don't need everyone awake yet - you just need enough people who can throw a wrench in the plans.
So the best scenario is that the DS goes into Panic Mode, second-guessing every idea that they come up with, trying to game it out ahead of time and failing. Low-level thinking by people who are probably screaming at their flunkies "Why aren't the magic words and pictures working this time??" Makes me smile.
