This question, in my opinion, is simply asking the student to consider all the variables which contribute to the change in climate from one extreme to the other. You know, scientifically. I doubt cow farts would have been part of the answer.
Most peope who KNOW everything on this exam couldn't just rattle it off. Tests like these aren't used anymore because they are largely memorization not logic.
I do not like current education BUT I think it is more important to teach critical thinking and comprehension than Jeopardy.
They do need to figure out how to apply math in the word problems, explain a few things about ocean temp, etc, and they at least will know how to use language correctly. I think this is a great example of a curriculum for the 8th grade. I don't even know how big a bushel is.
I thin your concerns are being refought (orchestrated) in the forms of AI (artificial intelligence) and LLM (large language model) learning. The idea of datasets in 1895 vs the future. The “humanity” is the critical thinking that will be missing in a future AI world.
Name events connected with the following dates: 1607, 1620, 1800, 1849, 1865.
Of 1607 I only remember that a cold front crossed our country from Iceland .... and that the Infante of Spain was seriously considering to call it quits in the low lands ...
My grandfather was the most educated man I knew and he had an 8th grade education. He built an aluminum skinned airplane in his mid twenties with his cousin in Florida and they flew it to the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York. The major hold up of the project was finding a suitable engine, they finally found a 9 cylinder radial engine that was much larger than what they needed so he extended the wings and put 250 lbs of lead in the tail to balance the plane. Then the problem was “like the Spirit of Saint Louis” he couldn’t see past the engine to fly the plane and land, so he made a hatch up top and his cousin would relay instructions to him. They ended up crashing the plane on the way back from New York landing at an airfield in Greenville SC. They hitch hiked back to Florida. They don’t build men like that anymore, I don’t know what the Nazis were thinking starting a fight with those super men and women….. fools. No wonder the the Cabal coward in fear and crawled in the shadows of God fearing men like that. God bless the greatest generation!
What a great test. If I could pass it I'd be impressed. Sad to say, I would flunk it unless it was an open-book exam and the "book" was Encyclopedia Brittanica.
I would fail. The weird thing is, though...how much of what's on this test is actually relevant? One can learn how to speak and write well without being able to diagram a sentence. And one can determine how much hay will fit in a wagon by loading the sucker up.
We've gone about education in such an anti-human way, possibly from the very beginning. How about recognizing it when a child shows interest and natural skill in a given area, and giving them all they need to learn all about it?
To be fair, there is a lot more history to remember today than there was in 1895.
That was my excuse when I was in school just a few short decades ago, but yeah. Remember this gem? Right at the end, about the history books.

Damn, those masons were on their game way back then.

“Geography (Time Limit - one hour)
What is climate? Upon what does climate depend? How do you account for the extremes of climate in Kansas?”

Yeah - was mostly joking - shoulda put a smiley on that one.
Nah, I'm glad you didn't because lots of lurkers would have thought exactly what you wrote. Together, we clarified it. Well done, fren.
I think climate depends on John Kerry, right? Also, where can I get the answers to this test? I flunked.
I think Al Gore bloviates a lot of hot air.
Upvote for using the word 'bloviate'.
Bill oreilly is that you?

Language laws are memorization as are mathematics and history even science. logic builds a thought process on top of the laws of nature

The NASA article says 'note that the exam took SIX HOURS to complete'.
1hr + 1.25hrs + .75hr + 1hr + 1hr = FIVE hours, not SIX.
NASA can't count.
Maybe they had a mandatory snack period.

We didn't take an end of the year test, but the subject matter is essentially what we learned in the 1950's.
I feel so stupid now.
