If you're a decent person who grew up with and are still mostly surrounded by decent people, it really just may not occur to you that evil and duplicity are commonplace in the world.
And when you're not a psychopath and haven't had a negative experience with one, it's probably difficult to believe that such people actually exist.
That's all in addition to corruption and cowardice in the general population, of course -- most people don't "see" the truth because it's just easier not to.

There's a huge difference between thinking something and saying something in public and then another huge difference when you are speaking it to an audience of millions. Any reasonable person would make damn sure about any statement they make under those circumstances. He could have been thinking these things years ago and only recently had the stage and confidence to speak them.

My older brother was a champion high school debater and he would piss me off to the point of getting enraged.
Lucky, to have him as an older brother. He taught me to keep emotions in check and work on winning the argument, rather than defaulting to anger while losing.
Masterful debate is such a beautiful thing.
Was thinking of Christopher Hitchens the other day. Hated his ideological persuasion, but damn, his Rhetoric was a thing of beauty.

Government education does not teach Trivium because the younger teachers are progressive. Trivium by definition is antithesis to our current government and to progressivism.

When we first started dating, she asked me what I thought of Barrack Obama.

She got so mad at me. She thought I was crazy and purely emotional.

For sure, MLK was classically educated.
There are others of course. For me, though, Douglas and Sowell are towering giants that always come to mind.
