I know a lock is the best deterrent but I’m just pissed that I not only lost an expensive stethoscope (can understand that walking away) but even personally bought hemostats and medical scissors have disappeared from my own locker, and even other people’s expensive Danskos that they keep under the changing bench have magically walked away on their own.
I know this isn’t Q related, or any other relation to what this board is about - I’m just asking for opinions from those who might have insight.
I’ll understand if this post is deleted, but there is a wealth of folks with knowledge in HR and such here I just thought I’d throw it out.
I don’t think I would rat them out, but if maybe they thought I would they would just go work somewhere else?
😬
I would do it as long as it is hidden. This way no one will know you recorded them and you will find the culprit. Then you can confront them and tell them you know what they have been doing and you have proof/witness that knows they are the one stealing. See if that stops the thievery. If not, then either I would go to HR and explain the situation. Ask HR if it is okay and if they say yes, come out with your recording, if they say no, take the camera home. But either way, if you don't get caught with the camera, you have the proof you need to know who is doing it. PLUS....don't they have locks on those lockers? Perhaps try changing lockers.
It is in the locker room aka people change their clothes there. No it would be illegal.
Not if she is putting it inside her LOCKER so she can catch a pic of their face. That is all she needs for HER to know who is stealing her things. Then she can remove it without anyone knowing, take it home, and tell the thief that she knows they are the ones stealing and that she will turn them in. They need not know how she knows; just that she knows. Then if I were her, I would change lockers and/or put a key lock on my locker.
Glue a mouse trap on the back of an empty box for an expensive item. Who needs a picture when the thief is hollering down the hall.
Ah! Great Idea. Thanks
Report it to HR to create a record of this incident. Spread the word and galvanize colleagues who have also been victimized. HR should acknowledge stealing incidents to the team to deter future incidents. The moment you go vigilante, it gives an employer room to let you go, even if it’s to reduce overhead and has nothing to do with your claim.
Yes, I would get HR involved. If something of mine was stolen, especially at work, I would report it. Go through all of the necessary legal options with your employer first. There needs to be an investigation of who has access to that area.
I don't know the answer, but I encourage you to set up the hidden camera unless it is an area where people are changing clothes. When you catch the thief, any objections they may have will be dismissed along with their loss of reputation.
You could put a little note that says "Smile, you're on candid camera, thief. Stop stealing, or I go to the police and HR."
Bluff
Actually not a bad idea. What is that person going to do - complain to HR?
NO!!!!! not a good idea. Complain to HR but stay out of it and get a lock.
I think it probably depends on the state you are in. Also the locker room is not a public place, it is your employer’s space. Just get a lock, so you don’t put yourself in legal jeopardy. It is safer for you legally, although I am not a lawyer.
I'm not 100% sure in the States, but in Canada there are no privacy laws in public places - except a bathroom and inside the home in which you dwell. In Canada, you have every right to film and photograph anyone in public. The only stipulation is if you're going to sell the images or film, you need a model release from the person.
Think street photography ; a very very popular branch and there are no laws about it in the States ( I am quite sure due to the amount of people I know that do it. I follow quite a few photogs on IG and many are street shooters ).
Unbelievably it is not illegal in UK to have video surveillance in a public toilet.
I know this because I was in the toilets of Wolverhampton train station and saw a camera watching me taking a leak. I complained to the train company and they explained they previously had problems with some kind of antisocial behaviour in the toilets and they were allowed to have cameras to combat that.
Would it be possible to use something like airtags to be able to identify the location of a stolen item after it's been taken?
Better yet my friend, I would FIRST go to HR and report there being a thief in your locker room. Ask them to please have someone stake it out to find out who it is before you have to resort to other plans as you and the other women are tired of being ripped off. Tell the HR that it is their RESPONSIBILITY to find out who is stealing from their employees and that you want something done with it ASAP. If they don't then I would plant a camera inside my locker without anyone knowing. As long as it is hidden from view of anyone changing clothes, and all you want is their face or perhaps name tag on clothing, then you should be all right. Then I'd remove my camera ASAP most likely at the end of my shift when no one is around.
engrave your name or initials on all your instruments. That medical stuff is pricey.
NO!!!!! not a good idea. Complain to HR but stay out of it and get a lock.
First, I would go to HR.
Second, I would put up flyers in the break room with pictures of items that have been stolen. This will bring interest to others, in the event they have had things stolen as well. Then you’ll have more support with HR.
Thirdly, I would get a gun safe mount it, or secure it in your locker. Put your valuables in there. Including your ID or other things that you bring to work like your car, keys and stuff like that. You should definitely be locking up your car keys, because you have no idea that somebody might steal that as well, and try and go to your house and steal something else while you’re at work. They could easily find your address on your identification, or by going to your car and looking at your registration. If somebody stealing from you at work, they were definitely steal from you at home.

If you have to talk to somebody in maintenance to have them put that in there for you, you can do that as well. Just make sure that it’s solid and secure
If you have to put a locker inside of your locker, this will be a sign to the establishment that there’s a problem. Why would anybody want a thief, working in their establishment? I know that seems like a stupid question in 2024, but the answer should be no. Nobody should want that.
I’m not sure how to manage a camera in your locker. I would find out with the laws and the rules are, and make sure you’re not breaking one of them. You don’t want to lose your job because somebody else is a jerk. Also, if because of your video they end up losing their job,… I wouldn’t be surprised if they showed up at your house and cause problems for you. This person has no morals. So take that into consideration, if you’re planning on exposing somebody, and then finding out that it’s you.
Also… If you have a gun safe put in your locker, and the culprit comes through to steal stuff and finds the gun safe… they may reported to HR, then you’ll know who your culprit is. If they’re stealing from you, they’re probably some type of a liberal who hates guns. This would be a trigger point for them, no pun intended, and perhaps they would want to report you because they think you have a gun in your locker. 😂😂😂
But of course, why would they know, unless they had broken into your locker. Problem solved.
In the meantime, at least your belongings would be safe. The link that I posted has a fingerprint release so it wouldn’t be difficult to get in and out of.
Depends upon whether or not the thief is White.
Go to HR? The mantra of people who have never had HR deal with an issue.
Talk to your coworkers who have also been stolen from. Tell them you’re going to report thefts from you to HR. Then do it. Let them know how it went and tell them they should do the same. You’ll get better results with them if you mention it again after more stuff gets stolen.
Don’t do high drama. Be quiet—and relentless.
One solution is to post widely on their grapevine that you came to know who "they are" - say you are using "they" to be politically correct - and the information will be sent to the authorities unless they stop, and that legally you can sue them, that you have two years to press charges. You must informa HR and security and you must tell HR the company is responsible for damages - they have insurance for this type of loss - as long as they don't have a "use at your own risk" in the locker room. Y'all need to get your money back.
It seems to me that an easily-visible Ring camera - hooked up or not - pointed at the area would be a good deterrent.
