My first thought was that this was connected to the string of West African countries that recently underwent military coups. These were all former French colonies with strong connections to the French financial systems and in which the French military retained a presence, and Paris exerted quite a bit of pressure on local politics.

But Malawi is in southern Africa and it was a British colony, not a French one. It would not be connected to that effort. Whatever this is, it is something else.

Start with the presumption that this is an accident, they happen, and then see if "too many coincidences" show up. I'll wait for more information for now.
