Choice quotes from the article:
"...California officials are pushing school districts to convert their surplus property into housing for teachers, school staff and even students and families. Some districts have already started; now the state wants every district to become a landlord."
"If Proposition 2, a $10 billion school facilities bond, passes this fall, schools could use that money to not only repair classrooms and other structures, but build teacher housing. "
"The model state officials often point to is 705 Serramonte in Daly City. The Jefferson Union High School District opened the 122-unit apartment complex in 2022, and it now houses a quarter of the district staff... The district paid for the $75 million project by passing a $33 million bond specifically for teacher housing, and borrowed the rest... Teachers commute(d) from the East Bay and beyond, and the district grappled with a persistent 25% staff turnover rate annually, said district spokesperson Denise Shreve... Since 705 Serramonte opened, the district has had near zero turnover...“We call it ‘adult dorms.’
"A better solution, she said, would be for housing to be left to regional authorities and for the state to fund school districts sufficiently to pay their teachers more."
How do we make socialism a reality?
Problem: California has done many things to artificially inflate costs, particularly with housing (ie expensive building codes, high taxes, etc), making California unaffordable for most middle class salaries.
Reaction: We need to create affordable housing for teachers as teachers are a necessary part of the work force.
Solution: Government owned housing for teachers. Zero percent turn over because they are terrified to try to find a better job because it will mean they lose the home they are living in.
Communism,takes another step forward.
I homeschool, I am lucky because I have a kid with a temperament for it and a living situation that is conducive to it. One of my best friends homeschools her oldest, but her younger one simply needs to be in a structured school environment. We need a wide range of solutions that work for all families (ie learning pods).
My wife and I homeschooled. Our kids graduated from high school, one at 16 and the other at 17. Both went straight into college. They had twice the education of their friends.
Sounds like your kids had a great childhood. :)
Inching closer and closer to 15 minute cities.
Don't want to comply? They'll burn it down
So tired of the 15 minute city conspiracy theory floating around here it’s fake and gay and makes us look like dipshits. But hell as long as there’s not too much Cultural Enrichment in my specific 15m area then I probably wouldn’t be too upset
It is not conspiracy theory, it is a concept for urban planing. Here, from the horses mouth:
There is even a dedicated web site: https://www.15minutecity.com/
You can't improve public education. It's designed to corrupt to useless brainwashing. Find an alternative the teaching "indistry" is screwed and never coming back.
100%.
Having kids sit in school for 8 hours a day for the vast majority of their time on this Earth before 18 isn't "education", it's a crime against humanity. And it only exists to make docile widget factory workers who are highly skilled at sitting in the factory all day and making widgets. Or more recently an office.
Almost all of the information outside of basic math and reading/writing is useless anyway. You're not meant to remember it, and I'd wager that most people forget most of it. What's really being taught is sitting still for extended periods of time and focusing on the tasks handed down to you by your superior.
In contrast, a real education would be going out and gaining experience in the world as well as a comparatively far smaller homeschooling program. Any kid that does that will turn out as a far better member of society than one who sat in even a good school all day for most of his life.
I am a big proponent of parents having a basket of alternative teaching methods to choose from. Kids are all different and one-size-fits-all education works for very few.
Back in the day, like 1930s and 1940s, both my late grandmother and late mother-in-law lived in what were called "teacherages". This was in Louisiana and it was the norm. The teacherages they live in were more like boarding houses because they were provided meals. Both had fond memories of their times spent in teacher housing.
Teacher here: I am working two jobs to make a ends meet. I had the District Superintendent tell me if I am not available for one after school meeting (when we are not paid btw) I will have to quit my second job. I was them told if my students slip... I will have to quit my job. No raise has been offered, even though I asked. No raise is merit based. Mediocrity is all that counts.
Ugh. The politics around schools is disgusting. I'm sorry that you are trapped in the politics.
I can proudly say I teach my students to think for themselves. We also come up with classroom rules that make us better citizens and not robots who simply obey. Finally in the beginning of the year I help my class come up with a document we all agree to: what can they expect me to do, and what can I expect of them. I personally can't have a rule that is not explained. This I love about teavhing :)
You never should have told them about the second job. It’s none of their business.
I needed to because I had complaints about not being available on Monday nights for student meetings with parents. I had to make an "available for you..." schedule for parents to talk to me about their kids. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights was not good enough... :(
That stinks.
They did this in a Dallas suburb. I think it turned out to be a good program. The students really learned a lot. I am guessing that they used the extra profit from free labor to stay in that school. Hopefully.
But you know CA will mess it up.
CA messing everything up is a feature, not a flaw.
Take every human out of California and just leave the land with the animals and the insects; California because a very nice place.
All monies and all programs funnel back to steal elections
Wow... China much?
they really miss feudalism don't they
It will be wild if commiefornia voter registration gets hacked and the entire list of voters is eraser right before the election making California I assume have to switch to paper ballots, or cancel their election till the registration is up and running again lol.
I predict another mass exodus from California!
