Trump has pledged to parents who homeschool their kids that he will eliminate taxes on up to $10,000 a year per child on all costs associated with their children's education (twitter.com)

We homeschooled our 4 kids all through their education. It was mostly my wife doing the heavy work. Anyway, we had to be a "satellite" location of the local public school. So we paid the bills for all our curriculum, but they still got their funding as if our kids were attending there. So we paid taxes to support the school and paid again for the costs of educating our kids on our own. Total scam.

It is. We actually went and asked about property tax supporting schools because we don't have any. They said we still have to pay. It's a damn shame the scam.

It's better you don't send them though. Look at this one.

This is a great alternative to ESAs and vouchers which make any private or homeschool a public school by default. I don't want a government handout--I opt out of the system.

Yes. We don't use Sarah Sanders' LEARNS Act because of the requirement that I must test my homeschooled children if I use that money. It's great that it's there for those who don't mind testing their kids, but, as I told my husband, we will use the library and free resources and I'll make up the curriculum as I go if it ever comes to it; I WILL NOT measure my children by the state's yardstick.

▲ 2 ▼
– QandAistheWay 2 points 1 year ago +2 / -0

Good for you! We dislike testing as well, but the kicker is simply having the government create a back door into the details of my homeschool. We have eyes and can see how government destroys what it funds. I'll keep my homeschool truly private, thank you.

Ditto. As enticing it is to get some of our tax money back through charters to support homeschooling the headache that comes with it and the hoops you must go through to get a measly amount of support is not worth it. My family definitely could use that money for our children’s home education as we live on one low income in California but we found a way to do it low cost and still be able to stay out of the system. We may not be able to go to museums or take enrichment classes but those are the things we had to accept when turning down that handout we in fact are entitled to. However if you take any money from the state for homeschooling your kids by default become a property of the government in same lines as public schoolers and homeschool laws may no longer protect your family and children. This is the main reason HSLDA warns against joining charters as they say they simply cannot protect your rights once you sign that paper with the government. The money allocated to each child’s education and funded through our tax money should be available to every family whether they choose to send their kids to public schoolers or homeschool. Give the parents the power to decide what the best education for their children is and fund them (pay them back their taxes) so they can make it a reality.

Though I'm now watching this video more closely, it's vague on whether it's more ESAs. Ugh. We want out of the government system, Trump Team. I know you have people reading this.

Homeschoolers, by and large, do NOT want to report what we are doing, where we are spending our money, or what curriculum we are using. That's our school choice.

If it is offered in a way which can be tracked, I'll politely decline. If this is a tax credit for homeschooling, I'm in. If it's a tax credit like the adoption tax credit, however, which was not refundable, then you can shove it. That adoption credit would have come it handy for raising four extra kids if we'd actually had access to it. No, it simply showed as a credit for five years until rolling off our taxes. Super helpful. /s

I'm not a college graduate, public school sucked for me, parents divorced and unleashed me on the world without any support at 18. Now I'm in my 40's, a certified professional who works with automated inspection systems, designs and codes algorithms, and have even been developing AI models for over a year now. Why would any parent keep their children in a state school when this is on offer. There are many, many families worldwide fleeing the West and taking their families to Russia. Putin has recently outlawed anyone promoting transgender or LBGT+ to children. Those convicted will suffer the consequences of their actions.

I’m a part of a small minority of young adults (20s and 30s) who is financially stable and a wise steward of what we have. We’ve chosen to forgo some things so that we could pay off our house quicker. If we have all these wonderful financial plans happen for the whole country, we will be partaking in a time where we will truly have abundance. I’m praying this time will set my family up for generations after me. The Lords will be done.

We homeschooled for a total of 23 years (on & off). All 4 of our children received practically full college scholarships. Homeschooling works when it's done right.

Parents (and others) who live in a school district should NOT be responsible for funding that school district via taxes if they do not have children in that school district. The astronomical amount these school districts get is mind-boggling. They're raking hundreds of millions of dollars in some cases and STILL demand more! This needs to stop!

I have always been concerned that if we except anything from the government it gave them the ‘right’ to tell us what to do. Our public schools get about $8k per child per year. We could have travelled the world with that kind of dough. What an education that could’ve been!

Do you know how it started? I was living in Washington and I knew my property tax and also logging was supporting the school systems. I actually went and asked them whether I need to pay that because I don't have kids in school.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– harkk 2 points 1 year ago +2 / -0

But they'll still pay local property taxes through the nose, either for their own property or through rental costs. Hey, you pay and pay to educate your own? I've paid for about 35 years since I had a child in public school and will pay for the rest of my life for an education system that brainwashes instead of educating.
