Not a fan of over nannying ppl, tbh. How about the disabled guy whose only crime was taking some Pfizer drug that caused a stroke, leaving him unable to work and very little quality of life remaining, yet one of his only remaining joys is oreos and milk? Not everyone on food stamps is a dirt bag. Some are just stuck.
I'd agree, However, I think the idea is not to deny a small indulgence like this, but to prevent people on the government dole from filling their carts with nothing but junk and soda (sorry, that was a bit redundant), as noted in the article. The Federalist does lean toward small government, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt here.
In a nation as wealthy as ours, where the poor can be morbidly obese, food stamps should not exist. If they were necessary, their use should have been restricted to heathy foods.
I remember when food aid was dried milk, dried eggs, blocks of cheese. It was to use excess commodities to help families.
Food aid was NOT intended to be a grocery store. It should be like WIC, healthy food only. Ppl can buy their junk food with other funds.
Ppl used to make their own cookies for crying out loud!
That's racist! Black people don't know how to use a measuring cup. -Democrats, probably
HA! You are SO right!!
Poor and middle class ALWAYS had/have to budget for food and everything else!
Make a pot of beans! or bean or lentil or pea soup. Done it too many times to count. It takes only a sliver of fat or a bit of ham bone to be heavenly delicious! That would cost less than a bag of Doritos! and feed a family of 6-8. High protein.
Bake bread, make your own cookies and cakes, ditto. Heck, churn your own ice cream.
Make your own clothes. My first 4-H blouse, I was forced by my mom to use fabric from a flour sack and I kid you not.
‘Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do, Or Do Without’ used to be the motto.
Now it is supposed to be "demeaning" or "racist" for those on public benefits to do without, while we middle class still have to follow the motto. And I might say, proudly do.
The schools did a great disservice taking out home economics and shop from the schools! Not everyone is suited for college, and even those who are need life skills!
Because the credit card is unobtrusive, easily concealed and no one wants to loose their life over a fudge round. In my city a man lost his livelihood because the cook put pickles on her hamburger, so she had her sister go out and get her pistol. She shot him and paralyzed him. His 3 year old daughter still has a father but he is perminatly a quadriplegic. All over pickles on her sandwich. Good grief. I will let you guess what ethnicity this person was.
Back in the 70's when I was in HS and worked as a cashier part-time at a grocery store (when we had cash registers- no scanners- and had to know prices by heart!), food stamps could only be used for non taxed food items. So meat, produce, milk, eggs, etc were ok. But no junk food, candy, convenience foods, alcohol, cIgs,etc.
Thats what i recall as well. My mom had to use them due to a divorce and 4 kids to feed. She worked her way out of using them.
I’m a cake decorator, I’ve had people spend hundreds of dollars on wedding cakes. Back in the day of paper food stamps I had a customer order a $300 wedding cake and then a week later cancel it. The company paid her back in cash. I don’t understand how they are allowed to buy wedding cakes with food stamps.
SNAP (Food Stamps) is not a social program. It's a program under the Department of Agriculture.
Farming is grueling thankless work.
If the guy farming tomatoes is allowed to to benefit from people spending SNAP benefits on his products why can't the guy growing sugar do the same?
Frankly, sugar is not used in soda - it's HFCS. I don't have a problem with people purchasing sugar to bake with or cook with.
I don’t know, people should be free to destroy their health if they choose. However, I shouldn’t pay in taxes or insurance costs for the consequences of their actions. You make yourself unhealthy you pay the cost.
True, but you shouldn't incentivize it. Just give out food stamps for clean food aka raw food like groceries and meat.
If you want to be unhealthy, get a job and buy all the processed crap you want.
Food stamps should only be allowed for milk, meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables. Not for bread, pasta, cereals, soda, ice cream. Even the cheese eaten today is made from Pfizer developed vegetable rennet. Animal rennet cheese is better for you, just like raw milk.
Are there available numbers on how much goes into Food Stamps Nationally? Imagine a future America of children raised on healthy food and healthy work ideals. Tie in Internet availability with hours worked in Community tasks & jobs that can lead to stable careers..
Pew Research has this: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/07/19/what-the-data-says-about-food-stamps-in-the-u-s/
Thanks. Much appreciated.
My idea, an incremental access program.
A 1 week menu would be created, all needed items would be bid and boxed with prep instructions. No choices for the folks being provided food. They receive about 8 days of ingredients to prepare meals.
You want week 2, you have to complete a training, and so forth.
Filling a cash card for these people on a monthly basis is only hurting them (but that is by design). I know to many kids that have no food at home on days 26 forward.
And in my state, that purchase does not get charged sales tax. So they have $400, I have to spend $440 for the same purchase.
Pre-prepare food boxes is a horrible idea. The government would take over that and start serving people the same food they’re serving kids in schools. I listened to a podcast on the Andrew Huberman show about this. Also, people working don’t always have the opportunity to have the time for the so-called pre-prep meals.
We tried those boxes once, voluntarily, and they just didn’t live up to the our expectations in flavor and portion size.
It is a box of ingredients and a menu/cook book, not the box food, just add water trash.
"Horrible idea", lol, thank you!
As far as government taking over, they already are. I just present an idea to build competency not dependency, a pathway to independence and increased skills in dietary responsibility.
No, I’m talking about the food that you ordered like you said that has ingredients, and you’re supposed to cook it yourself. They lackluster, we paid for it. It sucked. We don’t do it anymore.
Yes, and the way for them not to do it anymore is to learn, grow, and become independent of tax payer subsidies.
No person is beyond the ability to learn and grow, so any money taken from you and I at gun point by the government should help, not sustain a whole population of "pets".
They should not be allowed to buy processed foods. Only whole foods. No junk. Make some popcorn if you need a snack.
