Was THINKING about taking a trip to Oaxaca but now I'm not so sure now, mostly due to Trump kicking ass and border tension.
Wondering if anyone else had similar reservations about travelling to Mexico at this time.

There are so many beautiful places in America. Spend your money here not in Mexico!
Probably wise to avoid it for a while
DON'T DO IT EVER.
I never once wanted to go to Mexico.
The only time I stepped foot there was on a cruise and one port was Cozumel.
Unless you are staying at a Sandals or Secrets, I wouldn't go. Threat level is too high. And when we start pressing back on the cartels, they are going to look to exact revenge. Even then, a couple of guys on the beach with pistols aren't going to be able to do much against 20 cartel members on technicals with rifles and heavy weapons.
When I was 12 I was held up at gunpoint at a resort, but it was a rather tiny pistol and was many years ago.
Mexico is a no go zone now. Spend those dollars in this great country or it's territories.
Oaxaca is pretty far from the U.S. border. Also, that's the area where Mexicans protect their own border from Central Americans ... they know what's up.
That said, Mexico is always relatively dangerous compared to many other places. If you do normal tourist things you should be fine, but going off the beaten path is better with street smarts.
Given all the Q stuff, I'd hold off unnecessary travel for a bit; but if you're desperate for the tropics and leaving the north for a bit, try San Andrés or the US Virgin Islands. Or even the stateside Gulf Coast. That Gulf Coast.
Are you referring to the Gulf of AMERICA?!
Bingo!
It’s beautiful. Just don’t go looking for drugs or going to alert areas at night.
The tourist money is too great for the cartels to mess with.
Last 2 years one cartel turned over to police a few members who robbed tourists. Cartels won’t want the heat on their back.
I would never set foot in that shit hole, ever.
I just got back from Puerto Vallarta. It was wonderful. The people were lovely as usual. All the big problems are among the elites. The common folk like you and me just want to live in peace and harmony.
Hell no. Even the all inclusive resorts down there are sketchy these days. Go see Mount Rushmore. Take an RV.
I won't go anywhere i can't pronounce.
The name sounds like wahaka
If the cartel goes off on American civilians in Mexico it would be one of the dumbest fucking moves of all time. It's bad for business all around. Still might want to stay away but I don't feel like it's a problem. Been down there many times.
Yup. If Trump sees this happening, it's over for them. He will go full ham on them and they have no chance at surviving.
That would be my guess. If I were them I would think about laying low but then again I believe all the cartel tops answer to a master as well.
I'll deviate from the consensus a bit.
My experience in Central America is that most people down there have learned to disassociate people from their government. They live it first hand, and they don't assume every gringo is part of the US government.
That said, things are likely to get a little worse in the short term, due to the immigration situation and the likely anti-cartel actions. Probably less of an issue once you get away from the border.
Even if you're not thinking of driving (but especially if you are) there are several Facebook groups out there with lots of resources dedicated to driving the Panamerican Highway, but they've basically morphed into advise travelling the entire distance from Alaska down to Panama and even south of that. There's near real-time updates on the road situation, border crossing, police actions, roadblocks, cartel activities etc.
One I belong to is the Panamerican travel association. I think you have to sign up https://www.facebook.com/groups/panamtravelers
There's also one called On The Road In Mexico that I've seen reference to, but there appear to be two facebook groups with that name and I don't know if one or the other is better.
I know a lot of people think it's dangerous South of the border. In some ways they're right. But I'd rather be in most of Mexico that most of LA, NYC, Chicago, Baltimore, etc. There are dangerous places everywhere and Mexico doesn't have a corner on the market.
Would help an awful lot if you speak at least a little Spanish. The more the better.
Like everything else, so much of what we hear about Mexico is total bullshit. Be wise in your travels and you are likely going to have a fantastic vacation. The border towns are fairly hazardous, but interior Mexico is beautiful and safe. That said, pay attention to where folks tell you not to go. Report back. People should know the truth.

I went to the Yucatan last year. At that time it was just fine. Even went to local towns and no problems. Yea there are shop owners that holler at ya wanting you to spend money at their place, but otherwise the locals are very polite and friendly. It was for sure run down and a bit trashy and La Policia were running around standing in the back of trucks with roll bars carrying M16s and mounted automatics but there was never an uneasy feeling about it. It was actually kinda cool to see kek
Yucatan is a bit more touristy and I don't know much about Oaxaca but I say go for it. Just be aware and don't be complacent. You only live once.
I would avoid honestly.
