When i was in college, back in 2007-2009 time frame, people would joke that if you found a penny on the ground and picked it up, you were Jewish. I'm surprised the media hasn't picked that up yet calling Trump antisemitic for this action.
Growing up, if I walked past money on the ground because it was "just a penny" I'd get knocked up side the head - "God's put money in your path and you're turning it down?"
I'm never too proud to pick up free money...
You can't ask the universe for monetary abundance and then turn your nose up at it when it's literally thrown at your feet - "Oh I meant hundreds..." Frickin ingrates!!!
Incidentally, I've had 20s, 50s and 100s fall at my feet from the wind blowing it to me - across the field in the country!!!
"I'm a magnet for free, easy cash. Even the impossible manifests for me."
What conversation are you playing in YOUR head? Not good enough? I'll always be poor? Maybe it's time to get off it and change the channel...
A penny now is worth a LOT less than it was even in the 90’s and 00’s.
5 pcs of bubble gum used to be a dime, or even a nickel, now often a half dollar or more.
The only reason they’ve stuck around this long is not because of their value as a medium of exchange, but because of their value as psychological rounding error manipulation, and even that is now outweighed by the costs of using it.
When the cost of fuel required to transport the object vastly outweighs the value of the object, whose sole purpose is to be a medium of value, and the manufacturing of the object costs more than the object is valued at several times over, the object’s days are numbered.
Pennies aren’t just economically inefficient for the government, but also for businesses and people as a whole.
By weight, I’d rather transport gravel, or manure, or even sand, as they probably all have a higher resale value. Definitely the manure. People can’t get enough of that shit.
I do like this post, thanks for the tag! Just detailing my shift in viewpoint on picking up pennies that happened over the last few years, driven by how long I have to save pennies, and how heavy they are to transport, and how long they take to count, just to buy a pack of gum.
We wanted a metals backed currency and we get rid of the penny because the metal is worth more than .01. The problem is the fiat dollar, not the penny. Getting rid of the penny is a horrible idea.
When receiving change from paper money I always throw the pennys on the ground and if there is candy/gum machine (like when we were kids, put in coin turn crank out comes gumball) I leave it on these for small children.
In case you missed it, u/AmateurExpert posted THIS thread the other day, chock full of important information from our history.
With pennies being eliminated, this is writing on the wall that changes to our currency is on the horizon... and you should probably educate yourself on what's happened in the past, so that you can look forward to the future with wisdom.
So the answer is to have a program where people turn in their pennies to a bank for 1.5 cents per physical penny turned in. Start over since we have enough pennies out there and buying them back is cheaper than minting new.
It’s hard to pinch something that doesn’t exist anymore 😩
What are all the little old ladies that hold up grocery store lines, looking for loose change in their purses, going to do now!?
Can they add by fives?
Will they round up or round down?
The suspense is already killing me!
😂
No worries, we can still be "nickeled and dimed".

In my world...
"See a penny pick it up...
All the day you'll have good luck..."
I have picked up pennies my whole long life...and now we turn the page...tradition forever gone...
yes i have picked them up too...still no luck

Really? Never knew I was Jewish.
Scottish man enters the chat...
Oh yeah? Pfft ... Hold my beer...
of course, we all know how copper wire was invented
Two Scotsmen fighting over a penny, right?
Notice what I did there? 😁
That's a good one!
I lulled.
😁
Good humor sticks around!
Everything else gets picked up and put into Amy Schumer comedy specials.
The slop trough of comedy.
Don't give them more ammunition.
It costs a lot more to mint all the rest. End The Fed.
Is this the beginning of the end for dollar fiat?
How can you not have a penny?
Seems like nothing...but it's significant.

Make pennies copper again?
There are plenty of pennies in circulation.
Hold onto the ones you got - they will be valuable someday.
I'll keep them next to my beanie babies 😁
Lol. Hey I'll trade ya for my mom's Hummels
😆😆😆😆
You can't give those things away!!!
I know, my mom loved them so although a minimalist I hang on to them.
I don't like the rounding system Canada uses without the penny: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/programs/about-canada-revenue-agency-cra/phasing-penny.html

Trump directs Treasury to stop minting new pennies, citing cost
Upright Citizens Brigade - Ass Pennies
Next, they will come for the nickel, but i don't give a dime because I will take quarter in the notion that all cash will be gone soon.
A lot of stores, especially places with higher prices like amusement parks, have already stopped taking physical cash.
“All debts public and private?”
“I’m not going to let you owe me a debt if you try and give me that trash.”
Oh... Speaking of "Coins"...

I'm just going to save my pennies...
They make great flat washers that fits any size bolt you drill it out to...
Plus, it makes certain people mad destroying coins like that, which makes it really special...
I each one is worth 2 cents, I think I'll buy a few thousand rolls of them..double my money.
2 cents? 3/4” zinc washers are $0.57 each at Home Depot!!
You and u/TaQo are the geniusests!
Lessee… calculate the drill bit wear, maybe a bit of angle grinder… added cost mmmmm
LoL!
Put them with your beanie babies and hummels 😆
You just gave me the perfect reason to stop throwing them away!
Value restored! TaQo saves the Republic!
“But difs is iwwegul!!”
“What’s the constitution say the ONLY thing allowed to be used as money is again, commie? Who’s breaking the law, here?”
Also, BIG lol at the video. I’d forgotten all about this.
Yes ..
Washers? Did you mean warshers?

He wanted to know the secret to his success... now he can't unknow it! That Bellamy account tho ...😁😁😁
All the pennies at the bottom of my purse will help him out.
