Denmark is only agreeing to negotiate because Russia has shown interest in Greenland. Former NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did the same thing in 1989 in regards to the Herschel Walker trade. They ultimately won the trade in the form of three Super Bowl Championships.
Russia is looking at the area for "expansion," and it would be bad for Denmark's relationship with the EU and NATO if Vlad the Bad were to succeed in his "expansion."
Not to mention it would give legitimate reason for Russia to be sailing all around Northern Europe with merchant AND warships. In addition to a strong strategic & tactical stepping stone into the Atlantic.
It's already a busy pond which could get awfully crowded very fast.

Very astute question, anon. You may be right, as it is considered the geological dividing line between Arctic Ocean. Crustal plates are becoming dynamic right now all over the globe and geologically, one could argue that Greenland is really a part of the North American continent rather than the Euro-Asian plate.

That's where I have a hard time understanding the motive. China has no free access into the Arctic Ocean. Russia or the United States can interdict any traffic through the Bering Straits, which is the access closest to China. Otherwise, China would have to sail halfway around the world, either through the Straits of Malacca / Red Sea / Suez Canal / Mediterranean / Straits of Gibraltar, or around the Cape of Good Hope, to get into the Arctic Ocean between Iceland and the UK---for what purpose? They would be shut off by the Bering Straits. Commercial access to the Arctic Ocean is meaningless, if it is a box canyon.
Now, if one wants to develop ocean-bottom resources, that is a much different story. Being a box canyon may not be a problem if that is where the gold mine is. With Greenland and Canada in concord, the U.S. might be able to claim half the Arctic Ocean as a playpen, for geological extractions. Perhaps this is the light at the end of the tunnel that Trump sees, and motivates his ardent interest. It would take a LOT of investment and transportation coordination, probably roads and pipelines into Alaska and northern Canada. And if you look at a polar projection map with an inspired eye, it appears possible to link Greenland to Canada by roads and bridges.
How do we fix it? Easy, get out of the way we're taking Greenland. You can be a partner in this or a part of the problem. Your choice.
