If your husband had chicken pox as a child, he already has the virus in his body. The trigger to it becoming shingles is a lowered immune system.

Shingles is rare: don't kill your husband.
To be honest my in-laws get it all the time and they have singles all of the time. I don’t know anyone who has gotten that didn’t get the shingles.
There are many creams available for pain caused by shingles. Look for neuropathy creams.
