I'm taking it upon myself to add this information to all tylenol and acetaminophen related posts I see. For our uk/EU frens: the name you are hearing isn't what the drug is known as in your region.
The name in your region is paracetamol. The most common pain killer outside ibuprofen or aspirin. They are the same drug.
I asked the doctors i see and none of them knew what acetaminophen was. They thought it was a brand name for a drug, when I knew it was the generic name. Turns out the two regions (us/Japan vs eu/uk) abbreviated the same chemical formula differently.
N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP) is the formula, and America used the acet+aminophen as an abbreviation, while eu/uk use a different name to describe the formula (para-acetylaminophenol which was abbreviated to paracetamol) which is actually exactly the same as N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP).
My mom smoked cigarettes while she was pregnant and I still came out better than Tylenol babies. Well, at least a little better, I'm still on this board posting about Q so I caught a lil autism somewhere along the line
Me too! I knew of a doctor who took lots of tylenol for his arthritis back in the 70s and early 80s when it was somewhat new. He ended up needed a liver transplant when he was about 40. I stayed away from that drug and kept with the aspirin but very rarely.
Tylenol OD also severely damages the liver. People who attempt suicide by Tylenol OD often end up surviving the attempt, and a fair amount of them will probably end up needing liver transplants.
That also leads to problems because livers available for transplants are few, and often times transplant teams will deny these short-supply livers to someone who has attempted suicide - especially if there were multiple or recent attempts. They want the organs to go to someone who won't destroy them (keeping someone else from living). That is similar to not giving them to current alcoholics or drug addicts that may have destroyed their liver with cirrhosis.
Oh one HUGE note... It turns out one of the main treatments for liver toxicity from acetaminophen is - wait for it - NAC!
