This is the parent company, from Wiki- βBiglari Holdings Inc. is an American holding company headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, founded by entrepreneur Sardar Biglari. Its subsidiaries include Steak 'n Shake, Maxim magazine, First Guard Insurance, Southern Pioneer Insurance, Southern Oil, Abraxas Petroleum and Western Sizzlin'.β
More on the founder- Sardar Biglari (Persian: Ψ³Ψ±Ψ―Ψ§Ψ± Ψ¨ΫΪ―ΩΨ±Ϋ; born 1977) is an American entrepreneur who founded and serves as chairman and CEO of Biglari Holdings. He is also the chairman and CEO of Steak 'n Shake. Biglari is the founder, chairman and CEO of Biglari Capital, the general partner to The Lion Fund.β
Steak n Shake has an interesting history. This is the wiki part about our Persian friend, Sardar:
Entrepreneur Sardar Biglari took control of Steak 'n Shake in August 2008 after three years of declining same-store sales and losses of $100,000 per day. He led a turnaround which resulted in 24 straight quarters of increases in same-store sales and profits of $100,000 per day.[13][unreliable source?] He focused the brand on burgers, fries and milkshakes, reducing the menu from eight pages to a bi-fold.[14] However the chain ran into more problems in 2016 and onward, with revenue declining sharply.[15] Reasons included under-investment in the restaurants after the deep price cuts of 2008; competition from "fast casual" restaurants like Chipotle which aimed for a more high-class experience; and two expensive lawsuits from former managers who accused the chain of misclassifying them as salaried employees and refusing to pay earned overtime.[15]
Graham Rahal's 2015 Indianapolis 500 IndyCar was sponsored by Steak 'n Shake.
In 2018, Steak 'n Shake changed its business model to a franchise partner system, with Biglari attempting to turn all of the 400+ company-owned restaurants into franchise operations. Entrepreneurial single-unit operators could take control of an existing Steak 'n Shake for $10,000, an unusually low price, but were required to give the company 50% of the restaurant's profits.[16] Even though it offered the new franchise inducement, the firm remained heavily indebted. As of April 2020, its debt was rated as a low C/D "speculative" grade (colloquially known as junk bonds) by bond rating agencies. The Washington Post considered the chain to be extremely likely to default with a low likelihood of recovering, with the restaurant closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States being an unrecoverable blow to the firm.[17]
In 2021, Steak N' Shake made a strategic decision to transition away from casual dining and become a fast food restaurant. Steak 'n Shake replaced lunch counters with self-serve kiosks in 2021 to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The chain estimated that remodeling and adding kiosks to each restaurant would cost between $100,000 and $200,000. Changing the service model allowed a significant reduction of store staff. According to management, the old casual dining model faced the challenge of long food preparation time and a cost structure that required paying wait staff. Long-term strategy is to empower customers to place and pick up their own orders.
In February 2025, Steak N' Shake announced it would start making fries with 100% beef tallow by March 1.[18] This announcement was later praised publicly by US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who used it as an example of his "Make America Healthy Again" agenda.[18]
In May 2025, Steak N' Shake announced it would begin accepting Bitcoin as payment at all U.S. locations,[19] which will eventually include "all international units" at a later date.[20] On May 16, 2025, it began accepting Bitcoin payments at all U.S. locations using the Lightning network.[21][22]
kek. Yeah man sorry I didn't have time to do a deep dive into Steak n Shake. Maybe this weekend I'll go visit one for some real deal "on the ground" reporting (; π
They're coming soon to Tennessee. Any chance you're near the Kentucky-Tenn border? Soon you won't have to venture all the way to the west coast fren! Believe you and I have spoken on a long ago GAW post re: In-N-Out. Every time the name comes up I get a craving. Glad I have them here in AZ.
Per article, TN locations are in the works for Franklin, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, Antioch and Madison. Hoping for your sake one of these towns is driving distance for you.>
Iβm a lot closer to Ohio than Tennessee, but I go to Tennessee a couple of times per year for something. Iβll definitely give them a try once theyβve been open long enough to find their rhythm. Any time Iβve had in & out in Cali, itβs been on a pleasure trip of some sort. I donβt know if that just makes it seem better or, if it truly is that much better. I really think itβs that much better.
Absolutely agree. It really is that much better. Like you, I first tried INO on a trip to Cali 20some years ago and felt the same, "Everything tastes better when you're on a pleasure vacation". Then I moved to AZ, with 4 locations in driving distance. As a 15 year AZ resident now, INO still has the same delicious appeal, and I make sure to hit it monthly.
The closest Steak and Shake is 40 miles, east, southwest, or west of me. Yet i will gladly visit one and give patronage to their establishment when I am there. We.could use.a.lot.more nationwide chains doing the same. They just better have a big, big Old Glory fluttering in the breeze when I do.
Too many national chains are run by Leftists who'd never dare go against the dictates of the deep state. Yet the would gladly fly a commie flag if told to do so.
I lived next door to an old man who was the first financial executive for Steak and Shake when it opened. Nice guy, yet I didn't take the time to sit down with him and pick his brain about his experiences within the company. I'm certain he's long since passed away since this was 35+ years ago and he was 80+ then. Good memories.
Great! Now bring back human interaction!!! The new restaurant format sucks. Ordering from a kiosk is tedious (and asks for a tip!) and a bar code on a piece of receipt paper to use the soda fountain, obnoxious.
Beef Tallow in the fries!! π
With just a trudge of Louisiana spice....ππππ€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€
EVER TRIED HOME-MADE SHRIMP GUMBO???????
I make mine in CAST IRON POTS and OOOOOOH MY.....Next time I make it I'll send a "WHIFF" your way!!!!!!!! HOW'S THAT??????????????????

Can we please stop believing Corporate advertising and the performance of patriotism? We should all be smarter than this by now.
Ingredients in their fries, from their own nutrition site.:
Beef tallow does not remove the other crap they add to their food through their suppliers.
All fries use to be Beef Tallow cooked fries.
I donβt want to be a party pooper, I want to know if the owner is a real patriot. You can do many things but you have to be careful who you follow.
Thank you and God bless you for all the work you do.

Good job on a dig. As long as you're not single-sourcing Wikipedia though! π

Thank you but I do not trust no one from that Muslim world.
Plus their burgers are better than all other fast food burgers combined
And they bring it to you on a real plate like a diner
They are good, but have you been to In & Out?
We don't have in and out. It's too hard to get the fresher ingredients all the way across the country to Florida.
But we have steak and shake!
Thank goodnessπ
This.
This anon gets it
;)
Iβm in Kentucky and we donβt have in & out but, I would honestly fly all the way to the left coast for a double double. If you know, you know.

I would like to send my compliments to the person who had this exceptionally grand idea.

The Frisco melt is awesome. I see a revenue surge coming.
"In sight, it must be right." A great motto and it used to be a good restaurant. The steak n shake by me has been closed for years.
Nice!
I'm traveling later this month, and I'll finally have an opportunity to eat at one of these!
I'm really looking forward to it!
Steak n shake is the only burger place i go to anymore. They also have natural cane sugar sodas available
Great, hope it spreads to other businesses and homes!

Perkins vs Steak βn Shake
Omg I need to go there and get a Frisco Melt! It's been too long

There was a Steak and Shake near us but it closed a few years ago.
Yeah so many good restaurants are gone.
Boy you nailed it. You are right.
My husband and I say it all the time. These children have no idea what they missed.
No stores open on Sunday. Everyone went to my grandmother's for dinner every single week.
We played all day outside until the street lights came on.
What memories.
Cheers friend πΈ.
