Any small group can attack a ship 10 miles off the coast. This could easily be Israeli mossad forces in Iran, ocassionally firing at random ships... then watching Iranian military getting the snot bombed out of them in response.
It could be Kurdish, or even Omani or Saudi forces who infiltrated Iran, and shoot a missile or drone at a ship... which results in Iran being destroyed.
It could even be U.S. special forces providing justification for further U.S. attacks on Iranian regime. The military strikes don't require notifying Congress... because we are defending international shipping per agreement.

At $60 per barrel, that would be $60 Million in inventory.
20% toll of that is $12 Million.
Can you imagine if the U.S. gets $12 Million per large oil tanker? An average of about 10 to 15 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) pass through the Strait of Hormuz daily during normal operations, carrying roughly 15 million barrels of crude oil per day on average. The total would be $180 Million per day just for those very large ships. That doesn't count any other cargo, LNG or other shipping.
That totals to about $65 BILLION per year just in escorting the large crude tanker ships. If you add in the other types of shipping, it probably goes to $100-$150 Billion per year.
