"We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait. The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World. The process and formation will begin immediately."

Ummm point of order: most goods for the usa are being produced in the states, most oil in the US is sourced there too now. Very little shipping to the states goes via this route, as it is more likely to go via the Pacific from Asia or via the Atlantic from Europe.
As such, this has almost zero impact on us citizens, so no this is not a tax on Americans. It is a charge that mostly Europeans will be paying instead.
The oil part cant be true. Gas is still at least $2.00 more a gallon than it should/would be if we were producing AND refining our own fuels. Also the prices would NOT be fluctuating with the Iran crap. It just went up again here by about $0.25 a gallon as soon as the bombing started again. I am sure it is even higher now since it has been a few days since I checked the store I have always used.
Oil pricing is based on global demands, is it not? International commodity pricing is outside my wheelhouse, so feel free to refute, but by my amateur speculation, if Hormuz causes foreign price spikes, some portion of US supply will be purchased, causing prices to rise here regardless of source.
20% tolls? Most of the big oil tankers hold 1 Million Barrels of oil.
At $60 per barrel, that would be $60 Million in inventory.
20% toll of that is $12 Million.
Can you imagine if the U.S. gets $12 Million per large oil tanker? An average of about 10 to 15 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) pass through the Strait of Hormuz daily during normal operations, carrying roughly 15 million barrels of crude oil per day on average. The total would be $180 Million per day just for those very large ships. That doesn't count any other cargo, LNG or other shipping.
That totals to about $65 BILLION per year just in escorting the large crude tanker ships. If you add in the other types of shipping, it probably goes to $100-$150 Billion per year.
So when are US taxpayers getting some of the money the, our, politicians have been stealing from us? My guess-we will get tired of waiting before we see one dollar. Sorry but that is how I feel.
Take a smart guy (Trump) and let him grow up in NYC. He learns all about the protection racket from the wise guys. The smart guy becomes president and uses his street smarts against the world's biggest thugs (Iran) who want to cause trouble. So he turns their threats into cash. Now, he should do the same with NATO. In fact, I can see him and Putin discussing how it works. Putin probes NATO turf. Instead of demanding NATO increase their contributions he offers Protection at a price. Next, Taiwan and Japan pay for protection from Communist China. If Russia and China play ball they get a piece of the action. They probe and threaten, the U.S. offers protection. I think Trump figured out how to make the U.S. deficit disappear.
I'm fine with this. But why is it ok for us to charge a toll in international waters but no one else? If the answer is "might makes right," I'm fine with that. But it seems a bit hypocritical to do what we are accusing Iran of trying to do.
No one, including Trump himself, expects this to actually happen. It is his time tested manner to throw out a scenario no one wants, combined with the might to make it happen, in order to change behavior. After a couple days, the entire world will turn on Iran to stop causing all Hormuz shipping to become 20% more expensive.

I got it twice and third time was a charm.

I had that issue around the time you posted this comment. I just got back on looking from the mods if they know what happened
Just got back in....weird🤷🏻♂️😏
20% sounds good to me! No more policing the world for free.
This essentially another tax on citizens by the government. I don’t agree with any tax. This will just be used as an excuse to push up prices.
Unless of course the American government reduces the tax bill to Americans taxpayers for the same amount, then fair enough. That’s America First.
Otherwise it’s just another tax on the never ending list of taxes stolen from us by our self serving public servants.

Look up the term "Fungible commodity".
Roughly 60% of the oil we refine is domestic. About 28% is Canadian. The rest comes from abroad.
But buyers come from around the world for our oil. So we have to pay at least as much as they are willing to pay.
Agreed, and you said simply and plainly.

Who cares. You think gas prices will go down because of it think again. We are being played for profits

The US is providing security. That is the price for that security
You don't believe in might makes right as a guiding principle, surely.
In some cases, I most certainly do.
Well, yeah. Just making sure you weren't confused.
Pmsl - the us market is now 20% cheaper for goods than most nations with one tweet...
HAHAHA!!!!
