Android isn't horrible unless you log in (if you trust what the user agreement says). It's when you technically connect your phone to your google account the problems begin.
A lot of android models also support custom operating systems, many people use Android with NO google components.
But if you have an Android device you can root the phone, and completely destroy Google's ability to auto update anything. You have full control of the OS down to the kernel.
That's not possible on iOS
Most users don't root android, either, but for those that do, at least it wouldn't update because root changes your boot image.

Give it time. Google's probably already working on it and sending it out to manufacturers like Samsung; they have the ability to, on an unmodified OS, force you to install.
I just cut off automatic updates. It nagged me for a while, but still on 13.6. I quit updating when they started talking about installing COVID tracking.
The thing that irks me is if you don't update you phone, they eventually start draining your battery very quickly. You basically have to leave it plugged in all day to keep it from dying until you do the update.
14.3 came out on 12/14/2020 and on my phone it updated either that evening or the evening after. Are we sure that this was disabled that long ago? Maybe I'm hosed and I'll have to toss sim into an older phone for a bit... but for now I have disabled auto-updates entirely.
This is not for Parler viewing. Lin Wood said that Apple’s most recent update has a kill switch for the Emergency Broadcast System that Trump will use for getting info out.
i don't know how he would know this as i suspect an apple insider would have had to of tipped him off but linwood said the update deactivates the emergency broadcast system.
i agree with you that an apple employee told him anything. i think linwood is speculating as to what changes exist in the update. i also agree that not updating would be prudent.

What if the update installed, any way around that? I know nothing about "smart"phones. I'm asking for family members. I have a flip phone (yes, seriously.) But I don't know how to help those I know who DO have these phones.

Seems like you need to go with one of the two major platforms. Apple seems more secure and more in favor of your privacy than Google.

prevents auto downloads

Remember it is not confirmed they disabled the EBS! IMHO- more important to not allow APP updates / Or APP deletions at this point.
