Boeing C-17 is a heavy lift 4-engine transport, a BIG plane. Similar to the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, just a lot newer.
Now.
The C-17 is unimportant. The issue is the fact that NO military aircraft are "squawking". Every aircraft has a radio called a "Transponder". It's what civilian Air Traffic Control (ATC) uses to identify specific aircraft. It transmits altitude and other information that when combined with Radar, can give an almost "3D" picture of the airspace to ATC personnel.
NO military aircraft are using the transponder, so the civilian sites, like:
Can't see them. They still show up on Radar, but with NO identifying information.
The military has their OWN system, and civilians don't have access to it.
So, normally most military aircraft USE transponders, it makes it easier for civilian ATC, but as of a few hours ago, all military aircraft over the continental United States (CONUS), stopped transmitting transponder codes.
It's unusual, and COULD (and i emphasize C-O-U-L-D) indicate a nationwide operation in progress.
That's MY take.
You other guys feel free to elaborate or correct my assumptions...

Under the new rule, aircraft conducting operations related to homeland security, law enforcement, national defense and intelligence that could be compromised by transmitting real-time aircraft position information are permitted to disable ADS-B transmissions after obtaining proper authorization from the FAA.
So this would explain the multiple jammings in aircraft both in Europe and in CONUS... makes sense. Well, the most we can do is pray and ask God’s help regarding the safety of our servicemen and the success of their missions.
I watched at least 2 come in from Ramstein last night. Andrews, McGuire, and Dover seemed to be the hottest bases to return to last night. I believe 3rd airlift is at Dover and they provide support for Special Forces.

C17 is second largest transport aircraft in our fleet, behind the C5 (hubs is a Navy vet and we've lived near military bases our whole lives)

Moving a group of soldiers from one location to another, commonly called a deployment.
A platoon in the army is about 42 people. A company is 2-5 platoons.
I'd expect a company and some equipment in that grouping of aircraft, or maybe 2-3 companies if its just personnel.
