I don't think we need parties. I think they led to this paradigm of left, right, left that has marched America toward socialism/communism (really a technocrat oligarchy).
What we need is campaign finance reform and real reinforcement so that the mega rich can't install their puppets. Every candidate should get a set amount to spend and when it is gone you are finished campaigning.

What if the R party was told to lie down and take it in order for the counter punch? Think logically. Why would they allow so many things to happen? Time and time again pedes blamed Congress, the lower courts, and the SCOTUS. What if they were given a directive? Allow it to get so bad that we saw a taste of what they wanted to do to us. Then when they think Rs don't know how to fight they realize they were fighting smarter not harder the whole time.
How about many of them laid down and took it because they have just as much blackmail on them as on the other side. There have been two choices in most elections for a long time. Their democrat or their republican were the choices.
You don't ever really lose an election when you own all the candidates. We saw the cast of clowns they lined up against Trump on the Republican primaries, and at one time or another their controlled media tried to sell every one of those sons of bitches. This is their tried and true method, but it didn't work.
