This is actually normal.
Transponders and tracking switch off only when leaving controlled airspace (airports etc). All of them are civilian helicopters, the majority of them are departing from Aberdeen International Airport, a civilian airport, and all of them are bound for the North Sea.
And in the North Sea, there are a shit load of oil rigs, 184 of them:

If you do an image search for North Sea oil rigs and you might find photos of a dozen oil rigs lined up in a single area. It wouldn't surprise me if helicopter traffic is frequent (think of a bus, train or ferry timetable) and by the minute for this reason.

Transponders go off because the land based adsb antennas doesn’t have sufficient coverage.
We have awacs patrolling the north/Baltic sea every day, the swedes have their “ski box” and the Russian have their “Mainstay”, all three are operating more or less 24/7 over “open seas”.

What I do know is that for a week+ now activity over Europe has been abnormally low(like 5-6 planes at the MOST)... and now this...
Last time the activity level was this high was around the 6th..........
Don't know if related, but i saw 3-4 F-16 flying at very low altitude over my house in Denmark, at a few minutes interval. Could be same one circling, don't know, but it was not squawking so nothing showed up.

I mean, routine traffic typically doesn't occur at night time. You schedule that for when people and resources are awake.

You’ll see the same off the coast of Norway, look offshore from Stavanger, Bergen, Kristiansund, Bronnoysund and Hammerfest.

The awacs is patrolling that part of the North Sea at least once a week, often without a transponder operating “due regard over high sea”. Can you link me the photos? It’s strange that the Mil will use civilian owned helicopters? HKS is another company I found there (Helicopter Service) originally a Norwegian company operating offshore off Norway, but also a GB registered fleet operating out of Scotland.
If you search for SVF623 you’ll find the Swedish signal aircraft operating out of Sweden every day. I’ve been keeping a keen eye today, because of this post, haven’t seen anything extraordinary yet.

Ok, so no military aircraft that I can currently see over the US. (overnight avg. at a single point in time seem to regularly be >100. Thought: dang that’s a lot of fuel!)
I know this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this since I started planefaglarping a week or so ago, but who can answer:
why would they all turn off their transponders and/or block their locations from view for a period of time?
would this be coordinated through instructions to each individual aircraft, or can this be done system-wide? (I’d hate to be the one pilot showing up when everyone was supposed to be dark. Awk-ward!)

No it's not ffs. The heli's to the North and east are oil rig flights, the heli's to the South are a few AH64's out of Wattisham. The rest are civvy mixed in as OP hasn't isolated Mil only!
