Just because they told him they're deploying its important that they didn't give any specific opsec. Which they didn't. As a military member you can notify your family and friends that you are deploying to what ever country they sent you but no specific dates and any details of that sort.

Keep in mind that the additional troops could be sent in to relieve the ones that have been there. NG, USAR are only allowed a certain number of "active duty days" a year. However, if 1000 need to be relieved but 3000 are being sent it, then they are increasing the troops!
Not "allowed a certain number of AD days", it's required to have a minimum number of days a year to count as a "good year" toward retirement.
There's another cap at 180 consecutive days of State Active Duty, but that doesn't apply here- it only has to do with who's footing the bill, state or fed.
I guess my long-winded point was that the rank-and-file don't know WTF is going on or what the mission will be once they hit ground. Smart leaders will tell their troopies to shut their pieholes and not talk scuttlebutt in front of civilians. Hence the "no election talk".
