My husband went to get lunch and could not use his debit card at several different place. They are only taking cash. I just wanted to see if this is the case else where.

What if these are acts of white hat hackers? Small instances of inconvenience like this can nudge a society awake to the fact a cashless future is a terrible idea. Not safe, not reliable, not a good a idea ever. Take straight card users into the “have a little cash in hand” column. They learn cash is king on their own and won’t forget it.

That cashless society is really working out well.
It was interesting when my husband called and told me about the problem in our town. I reminded him that we have cash here at home just to be prepared for issues such as this. I kind of chuckled as he doesn’t always agree with my views.

Apparently, it's an outage across Visa's credit authorization service. Which is used by businesses across the country, not just for visa cards but any credit transactions. My store is currently one of those affected and this is what my IT guys are telling me.

My son just had trouble with his debit card in Chattanooga. It took him 25 min to get it to work.
I’m near there and mine went through several stores.

Went to get a Diet Coke at McDonald’s after work this evening...only taking cash.

I went to a McDonald's and they were "cash only" due to technical issues. Seems widespread.
But I bought food elsewhere and was fine using debit card 10 min later.
Having problems with several of our cards at many places the last month. 2 got so bad ( worked 2 out of 10 times ) we had to order new cards. Must be a regular thing now cuz cashiers just keeping saying " try it again it sometimes takes 3 times ".

I tried to check my bank (T-mobile) this morning and I couldn't get in because the confirmation code sent to my phone came 30 minutes late. It's still doing it...

Small town in western Virginia. Dairy Queen was cash only about an hour ago.
I had to get a confirmation # to log into my Account around 10am.
Visa and Mastercard both showing down on Down Detector, doubtful it's linked but worth noting.
A friend just outside DC texted me to ask the same thing. And another friend in FL too.
Just went to the post office in the Houston area and their machines were down. Had to write a check.
Husband used card with no issues in NC.

I wasn't able to get my card to work through paypal on line. PayPal said it wasn't on there end. It was my bank card. No explanation. I say...get any extra money out of the bank. Something is up!
I won't go on trips without having twice the cash necessary to return home.
The system is inherently fragile and vulnerable. Cash still works in a pinch.
