as for masks i offer you this. i just yesterday got my order of an oxygen meter which measures the % of oxygen in the air one is breathing. OSHA, which mandates certain conditions for Americans work environment, logically includes an oxygen content requirement for all workers. if you aren't working in an environment with sufficient oxygen it's a VIOLATION and amounts to illegal working conditions. usually this would pertain to concerns about workers in a manhole or other known potentially oxygen deficient environments.
so get yourself an oxygen meter (if you know others at your work of the same mindset have them chip in to spread costs) and a proper fitting N95 mask like they insist. and do the same test i just did that proved you only get about 17% oxygen with the mask on! depending on your field of work this can be particularly dangerous. are you in construction on elevated platforms or using power tools? not sure that a test with a loose fitting cloth mask will produce same result but that's not the point of this exercise with your employer. are they going to enforce you wear a proper fitting and properly worn mask or not. if they do they have OSHA violations on their hands and are open to lawsuits, etc.
