The script for this show was most likely written weeks before the taping and every detail had to be right or it doesn't go on air. The overlords cannot allow one single frame to go on air that hasn't been scripted and managed and directed down to the smallest detail.
So do I believe this story? HMMMmmm, probably not, and maybe even the kid himself was in on it. After all, it was on TV so it's not what it seems.
The subtext is that these wretched people can and will defile anything that appears as good and wholesome. I'm sure their viewing public got a good laugh out of it, but the subtext is that "good loses, we win, we're naughty and worldly, and we will have our way in the end, no matter what your pious Biblical beliefs are."
So I worked with this kid a few years ago at an office supply store before and after his auditions. As much as I believe Katy perry is an awful person, this post is kind of inaccurate.
Yes, he said he didn't want a kiss on the lips, but when he got back, Ben was the happiest kid in the world. He was kinda bummed he didn't make it, but he really did have a good time and was pretty stoked about that kiss. Talked about it with everyone he met.
Not that I'm saying what Katy did was acceptable at all, and I see the point the post is making here, but just wanted to add a little context.

I'm old, had older parents & grandparents, so lived in a different world. miss those days & music. love how it told a story & anyone could listen to it. new country is all about getting drunk.
and have seen how many of my middle-aged friends act when they listen to it, isn't pretty.

My thoughts exactly. It's a "reality" TV show, which means that everything about it is scripted. The reaction prompted was the reaction desired.
Rather than taking the emotional bait, it's better to ask the question of what the purpose of such a display might be.
