Any nation without an armed population is not free. There are actually quite a few countries that still allow citizens to own firearms, but only a small percentage of them actually do, for a variety of reasons, one being they've been domesticated and there isn't a "gun culture" so to speak. The same can be said for a lot of communities within the US. Also, some of these countries are so impoverished they can't afford them anyway and there isn't a soviet surplus they can just buy so easily.

For example, in Canada it is actually legal to own firearms and there are even gun stores in every city. Of course, few people own them other than outside of the cities so of course there isn't a lot of a gun culture there, especially with 200 years of peace and stability there isn't much of an incentive to own one outside of hunting.

The greatest stupidity of communism was attempting to destroy the US. Constitution 'Before' they established gun control. There are now 120 Million well armed Americans. The proper response is, 'Come and get them'.
