Giant spiders expected to drop from sky across the East Coast this spring. “Harmless” invasive species of spider the size of a child's hand is expected to “colonize” Nothing is a coincidence! I’m scared to say what’s next. (www.axios.com)

These have been around for a long time. They're actually pretty cool. I've had several as "pets" meaning they stay wherever I found them and I watch and occasionally toss in a fly. The ones "dropping from the sky" will be tiny babies on a long string of web.

Well, since you brought it up. Bill Gates is dropping his genetically modified mosquitoes in California and Florida. You know….for science.

Well great, I'm changing the first round in my shotgun to be #9 shot as I'm way more afraid of large spiders than I am of bears. Also, I hope permethrin will kill them.

I looked at the photo, and said to myself, "Wait a minute...that looks just like the golden orb silk spiders we have here in Florida." I look it up, and discover they are close relatives -- the Joro spider is an invasive from Japan.

OMG...when I first moved to Florida in 1997, I was renting a home in Vero Beach. There was a population explosion of them that year, and their webs were across power lines, trees, everywhere. I was doing some yard work in the property I was renting, and ran right through a web, wrapping the web around me with the spider trapped against my chest.

Needless to say, I had nightmares about that for years!

Okay, fine, I'll share a spider story. Yours was great by the way. And by great, I mean it freaked me out. Not cool at all to have a spider strapped to your chest by its web.

A good rule of thumb when you are camping is to zip your tent shut, and then kill all the mosquitoes so you don't get poked by them at night.

So, I did my business, used a light to attract them, and I killed them all. Then I turned in for the night.

As I was laying on my side with my head on my pillow, I felt one last mosquito on my cheek and quickly slapped the little punk.

I expected the sweet splatter of the little sucker.

To my surprise, I cupped something. Freaking out, I clenched my fist and threw whatever it was into the corner of my tent. I grabbed my flashlight to see what the hell it was, and it was a huge spider with a gigantic sack belly!

To this day, I have nightmares about that situation. Totally unexpected and I can't believe that thing was on my face!

I grabbed a lighter and torched that spider. I was so pissed off at it that I burned it to ashes. And then I burned its ashes to make sure it was dead, dead, dead.

And honestly, to this day, I still don't care that I burned a hole in my tent doing that. I would do the same thing today. 🦟🕷☠

I was bitten on my EYELID by a spider when I was a kid. We had camped out and I woke up the next morning with a huge swollen eye. Dr said spider bite. I share your nightmares.

AHHH FLORIDA SPIDER STORY TIME!

I had one of those suckers (I've always called them Banana Spiders) build a web that spanned MY ENTIRE BACK SLIDING DOOR. BOTH SIDES. And I wouldn't have seen it walking to the door directly. I only spotted it looking diagonally at it and seeing the spider itself and then taking a closer look.

I didn’t catch that. There’s a TV series, Inside the Dome, I think is the name. It’s very weird but after what I’ve learned here it’s closer to reality.

Oh, those guys. Yeah we got them here in Japan. They're big, but that just means they don't exist in any numbers. They set a web high up between trees and just chill there for weeks as they presumably catch bugs. I've never seen one inside the house, they're nature bugs.

A few years ago we had I think three of them in various places in our garden (wound up naming them), but I haven't seen any in a while. Maybe they all got visas to go live in the US?

Florida has Huntsman spiders aka giant crab spiders. 5 inches. One came in during a really bad period of rain one night. Just saw it walking across my living room ceiling. I was afraid my dog would eat it if it came down so I killed it. Not easily. They’re also invasive from Asia. They are really fast but they do eat bugs so they’re fine if they stay outside. shudder
