I'm a linguist, and I confess to being pedantic in many instances where terminology is used or coined.
Hopium seems to enjoy a rather broad definition, from "hopeful inspiring news" to "clickbait type feel good news that isn't based in reality but triggers a short-lived hope-rush", etc. I think the predominant vibe of the word is that latter, considering the correlation with (and derivation from) "opium".
I put to you that this is certainly the former, not the latter. Myself, I like the expression, "Hopermectin", where Hopium is that drug-like short-lived hope-rush, but some news and factoids, etc, deliver hope and inspiration that reinforces our mental and spiritual immunity to the dooming, and builds us up in a way that euphoric drugs do not.
But that's just me.
Opinion: there is no way that this is accidental or coincidental. Trump jnr will be very aware of the devolution theories, and this can logically be seen as contributing to bringing the concept and idea to the public, by dropping the word, even if the meaning here is somewhat different.
Vril theory states that a reptilian creature injects a parasite via probiscus into the eye of the individual which takes over and the living consciousness withers away painfully, effectively trading their soul for the new life.
I'm ok with explanation "it was used to draw attention and nudge readers to look it up". But really - what could be the word there, as opposite to 'revolution'? In-volution, as 'barricading up inside their bubble'?
Well, evolution is how something progresses and changes over time, in common language. Not always for the better, necessarily, rather how events play out and the parties of a situation adapt and change in response to each other and their circumstances.
If you unwind the adaptations to the chain of events, devolution is an apt descriptor.
Anything to grow the government and suppress the people. It isnโt Biden making these decisions, it is either BO, Valerie Jarad, SR, J Brennan, HRC, etc.
Nice bit 'o hopium, there. Thanks.

<end of <kek> rant>
I do like hopermectin, but hopium is easier to type :)

I thought they just shoot blood out of their eyes
...probiscus = tv / media
I like your explanation. I agree with you, and actually when I look back at the moment I typed my short statement, in my heart it was both....
Grade A Hopium right there...
Hopermectin, actually.
Hmmmmm
Methinks it may be HABBENING!!
It's been habbening for quite some time now, fren.
But it always takes time for things to come to the surface.
Fantastic movie!
Wink, wink.
Yeah, that's no coinkydink, for certain.
Oohhhhh goody.
I saw that, too!!!
Hehehehe. He said, โdevolution.โ ๐
What are the chances he just randomly happened to use that word and not have read Devolution? I'd say unlikely.

This is correct. The band Devo famously adapted the word and brought it to the general public senses at large.
I've been saying society has been devolving ever since ordering my first energy dome out of the New Traditionalists LP fan club insert (mid 1980s).
1 - This is the original definition. The term devolution was made popular to the general public at large by the band DEVO In the late 70s.
