I remember when they closed the state mental facilities. They literally kicked everyone out with no where to go. If they had no relatives to go to, they went to the streets where many of them are still today.
Does anyone know the reason they closed the state mental health facilities. I'm sure the bottom line was money but was there something more.
The conditions inside them were the stuff of nightmares. Public sentiment to shut them down was practically absolute at the time.
ACLU
There were very serious civil rights issues. Different types of status to be institutionalized (e.g. 5150 in California) result in a complete suspension of your constitutional rights. This is required to forcibly detain you, despite not being convicted of a crime.
The closure of the public hospitals followed the vilification of the lobotomy, which was in many regards superior to the chemical incarceration that replaced it... again, people were concerned about the civil rights issues.
The fact is, our mentally ill need to be cared for by their family and community with expert guidance. Unfortunately, our society has become too diverse and low trust for that to be a reality for any but the very wealthy.
"He's Huffy. He Ain't My Brother"
Bring back orphanages, too. Foster parenting is false parenting. This passing around of kids creates nutcases.
No, closing them was a step in the right direction, no healthcare in any form should be state run. The price of individual mental health care is cost prohibitive though, because it follows the market of state run healthcare, in most situations. It also basically hasn't changed that much in many years. Individual issues need individual attention, not cookie cutter approaches. The solution is community driven mental health help. We can do it with soup kitchens, why can't we do it for this? The expected rebuttal is "well how can we depend on the community to do it rather than the state"? Simple, you start. Hell I'm even inclined to do it myself, just trying to find people that would be interested in doing it too in my city. In the past, the church could solve this. And it still can.
Great idea, but what do you do with the people who are a legit danger to themselves and/or others? Not saying it's a state solution, but it's something you need to think about if you're serious about this.
Once they turn violent they go to jail. Before that point their families go through a living hell trying to care for them.
There has to be something in between the eugenics based mental facilities and just having loved ones dosed like crazy with the colorful pill of the week and their families getting destroyed.
my niece is working on her master's in psychological nutrition -- the brain gut connection. there's promising research showing some conditions almost completely go away when they're treated with diet and nutrients.
the sad irony is that these patients often get incarcerated or hospitalized, put on institutional food and, predictably, they deteriorate.
The link between celiac disorder and bipolar disorder is certainly one worth investigating.

Interesting, thanks.
Folate uptake is another one. And the MTFR gene mutation which can cause deficiency is not uncommon.
Well,I wish you luck fren. π
Lobotomies were a great solution that has been vilified by the pharmaceutical industry.
Losers Who Hollywood Makes Us Believe Are Winners
Despite the demonized Nurse Ratched character, that useless and self-indulgent drifter Randle McMurphy deserved what he got.
I dunno, dude, cutting somebody's brain in half seems a bit extreme... you might as well say euthanize at that point...
That isn't a valid description of the procedure and most individuals went on to lead normal lives. One guy wrote a book, quite interesting.
maybe I'm thinking of the kind they still (rarely) use for epilepsy...
still, I gotta figure there's a better way, but I'm not the expect, so...=/
They replaced lobotomies with drugs... But once on the street, people wouldn't take their drugs.
I've been saying this for a long time. Mental institutions need to make a great come back.
βMental healthβ is also a misnomer in this discussion (IMO).
The main issue is our evil government preying on the mentally ill, brainwashing them, and then turning them βonβ to do their evil bidding.
Manchuria Candidate anyone?
They put the truth in the movies and the fiction in the news.
They did the deinstitutionalization of mentally ill patients started in the 1960s. Reagan's part in it was when he was governor of California and the state senators and congressmen put a bill through saying that you could not institutionalize someone without their permission. So in California, they were trying to treat people on the streets and of course the mentally ill we're not going to go in treatment against their will. When you don't have morals, you don't care about life or taking a life. Therein lies the problem. Good people are not the problem. Legislating Guns are not going to make criminals decide they want to be law-abiding citizens.
In the 1980s? Hm, who was President then?
Or was this just something every individual state did on their own?
How it is possible people with mental health issues under drugs is allowed to vote? We can erase the Democrat party just by banning the vote for this people. And would be biblical and hilarious.
Ever heard the theory that earth is just an interstellar insane asylum? Probably bullshit, but it makes more sense with every passing day...
It is absolutely amazing how much the left completely flipped on "mental illness."
Before, the left were the ones pushing that mental illness is a real thing and we need better programs to help patients. But now, they act like mental illness is completely fake and isn't a problem at all, while the right keeps saying it's a huge problem in the country.
I keep saying, bring back lobotomies! Big pharma will never let it happen
They'd lobotomize all of the deplorables in their reeducation camps.
Thankfully, they never thought she would lose.
I follow a lady on TikTok who has a VERY troubled young son whoβs in residential treatment now because he has assaulted family members, teachers, and classmates, tried to set his school on fire, etc. Kid started showing signs of this behavior at THREEβ¦wtf do we DO with these people? His parents had to press assault charges on him for anyone to take their pleas seriously. Left to his own devices heβd be a mass murderer of terrifying proportions, thank God his parents have pushed to have him put away, hard as that must be on their hearts. I hate to say it, but for these people with no hope of recoveryβ¦we put dangerous dogs down. I donβt see the point in keeping a murderous shell of a human being with incurable, untreatable mental issues alive and contained for 80 years.
Absolutely need more help in mental health. The rules changed back in the early 70's as far as keeping really sick people locked up. I can tell you that anyone put in a mental hospital knows about the 72 hour rule which is t=they can 99% of the time check themselves out after that amount of time.
Back in the mid 70's, my uncle took my brothers at knife point. Thank God he didn't hurt them but because he didn't there was no way to lock him up. My Dad was an attorney and even he couldn't get anything done.
We need to get back to where mentally ill people are required to stay in a mental hospital until they are stable. Laws should be passed that if these people are released with meds, they must have someone supervise them taking it. Clinics could be constructed. Look, I am not normally an advocate for meds but with truly mentally ill people not having those meds can make them extremely dangerous.
Ever since that Ivermectin stuff turned Joe into a centaur, he's been my favorite horse.
Does ivermectin cure mental problems ?
Bullshit.
We do have a mental health problem stemming from being poisoned and made worse by pharmaceuticals. Tackle mental health by stopping the use of shit like glyphosate and pushing refined sugars and carbs on people. Detox and heal the population.
The majority of mass shootings that make the news are hoaxes or false flags perpetuated to push agendas. Enforce the current laws and make range time more popular to get more trained and familiar with handling their guns so that they are prepared in defending themselves or others.
ABSOLUTELY. We cannot legislate away evil but we can enforce the laws available to us.
Bring back strength of the family units. Where is support for grandparents raising the children of their own incapable children? With a few revisions to tax and welfare requirements for assistance.
Mental health treatment reforms...too hard to transition your child from 17 (adolescent) to 18 (adult). I'm sure many get dropped between the cracks.
Praying for our society.
In NYS, the mental health facilities were converted to prisons because of the increased need for cells. A certain percentage of the mentally-ill became inmates.
Why not turn the DNC into a mental health institution, that can any patient not just the democrats/commiesπ
We have a project mockingbird + mk-ultra problem.
The mentally unstable truly are a voting bloc that the democrats actively seek to control.
Being a kid during that time period who took the city bus through a mid-sized but high crime city, it sure as hell made things more scary. Add in an extra dose of creepy if their random batshit crazy stories start to involve sex/rape/violence.
Fill it up with Trans and pedo people.
You know as well as I do, if you're on this site or P.win, shit even Truth Social. If they were to reopen the mental facilities, we would be the first ones they put in there.
This assumes government, liberals, and people who like to screw others over are not going to declare anyone considered an enemy as mentally unstable. Like Red Flag laws, this is a trap. A man is either free or he is not. There cannot be any apprenticeship for freedom.
The remedy is to repeal all infringements on the right to bear arms. If everyone that chooses to be armed is armed, "mass shootings" will mostly disappear. Anyone using a weapon to commit a crime or atrocity would meet deadly resistance in mere seconds in an armed society.
Those with true mental illness issues should get the proper help and treatment, but should never have their right to bear arms taken. If so, please cite the authority where government or anyone else has the legitimate authority to take rights away. Rights conferred upon them by their Creator.
"[You have Rights] antecedent to all earthly governments: Rights, that cannot be repealed or restrained by human laws; Rights, derived from the Great Legislator of the universe." ~ John Adams (1735-1826) Founding Father, 2nd US President A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1765
"In short, is not liberty the freedom of every person to make full use of his faculties, so long as he does not harm other persons while doing so? Is not liberty the destruction of all despotism -- including, of course, legal despotism? Finally, is not liberty the restricting of the law only to its rational sphere of organizing the right of the individual to lawful self-defense; of punishing injustice?" ~ Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850) [Claude Frederic Bastiat] French economist, statesman, and author. He did most of his writing during the years just before -- and immediately following -- the French Revolution of February 1848 What Is Liberty?
