Holidays isn't about the money. It's about rejoicing in the occasion with loved ones. If you're so focused on the "unfairness" of the marketing, then I suggest you are allowing yourself to be manipulated in a negative way. You can have fun with relatives without the gift giving.
Sounds like you need a holiday. You don't need to bow to the pressure or spend the money, or live up to anyone's expectations but your own (well, of your spouse too if you want to be happy) I agree that there are some bullshit holidays created by greeting card companies but there is a list we must celebrate, or at the very least, observe. Of course Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, but ones I think are just as important are, Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Without the people we celebrate on those days we would not be able to celebrate another important one. The 4th of July. Now go get some m-80's and some Roman Candles cause it's almost party time.
Christmas and Easter are manmade. Neither are in the Bible, and neither events were likely to happen on those dates. They were created to convert pagan holidays into Christian holidays. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not biblical. There is also no mandate in the Bible for us to celebrate anything or do anything other than the sacraments, but that again doesn’t mean one cannot celebrate.
Huh? Bible has feasts / holidays. Feasts are Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Firstfruits, the Feast of Weeks, the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles. I'm sure Sucot is in there somewhere. Go build a hut and party.
Yes there are lots of feasts and holy days in the Old Testament but there is no commandment within the New Testament to celebrate any of these. The law was fulfilled, there is no need to hold to those old rearmament feasts. Again I’m not against people celebrating, just pointing out this biblical perspective. Many reformed churches strictly adhere to the regulatory principle of worship and have no Easter or Christmas Sunday services.
The day of rest and weekly observance of God’s completion of creation.
Rosh Hashanah
The Jewish New Year—a holiday observed with festive meals and a day spent in prayer or quiet meditation.
Yom Kippur
The Jewish Day of Atonement—the most solemn day of the Jewish year. A day devoted to self–examination, and the chance to begin the New Year with a clean slate.
Sukkot
A celebration of the fall harvest, this holiday also commemorates the time when the Hebrews dwelt in the Sinai wilderness on their way to the Promised Land.
Shemini Atzeret
Literally the “8th day of assembly,” this holiday marks the end of Sukkot with an annual prayer for rain.
Simchat Torah
The day marking the end and the beginning of the annual Torah reading cycle.
Hanukkah
A festival celebrating liberation from oppression, freedom of worship, and finding light in the darkest of times.
Tu B’Shevat
The Jewish “New Year of the Trees,” celebrated with observances that connect us to our environment and the natural world.
Purim
A day celebrating the saving of the Jews from a diabolical plot of destruction, as recounted in the Book of Esther.
Passover
A festival of freedom that marks the Hebrew exodus from Egypt long ago.
So my question to you is…what else in your life isn’t biblical? Can’t get on your high horse about holidays not being in the Bible when we’re all human and fall short of God’s perfection DAILY.
I enjoy holidays in the ways they were originally intended to be enjoyed. With family, good food, good cheer, and rest. And for Thanksgiving and Christmas I beautify my home. I don't get into the commercialization of any holiday. For Christmas, I make gifts for my family, and I don't buy for anyone else.
It's like anything in life. Holidays are what you make them. If you allow yourself to get bogged down in the pressure to buy expensive gifts or cards for everyone, then you'll start to have negative feelings. I don't watch TV, but I avoid any kind of commercials (radio, YouTube) during Christmas because I hate how they've tried to turn it into a corporate holiday full of only secular music, political messages, and dollar signs. Otherwise, I'd probably hate it, too. And Mother's and Father's Days have gotten just as bad, especially now that advertisers are catering to a specific agenda. Avoid the advertising and hype and enjoy the true spirit of these days.
I'm with you 💯percent on this fren! I've been ignoring them all four years for the same reason.
I see a lot of mixed reaction as if you criticized pornography. Try telling people that we should get rid of pornography and you'll hear things like, a little porn is healthy. Most holidays are just pumped up corporate bull shit.
Make a point of doing something the day before or the day after a "holiday". It's just as arbitrary right? Maybe Christmas in July? Celebrate the way you want, just remember to celebrate.
Yeah .... well .... commercial opportunities. You either participate in them or you do not. How you spent your holiday time is up to you.
Paul in his letter to the Romans specifically addressed holidays .... Some celebrate a new moon or do not. Be happy with what you find important and live accordingly. And let others be.
You can do what you want with a holiday. Your experience is all in your control. I like the days off and we de-commercialized holidays some years ago. Only very young children get presents for Christmas, etc.
I'm with you, fren. You spend a month preparing for a big holiday and then its over in one day. Afterwards, you spend even more time putting all of the stuff away you dragged out. It's exhausting. Guess I'm getting too old to have fun any more.
I'm pretty sure the greeting card (Hallmark) and candy (Russell Stover) industries bribed the congress critters way, way back to create these named days.
I agree there shouldn't be a set "day" to do things we should be doing every day, but if you don't like holidays just don't celebrate them. they bring happiness to many other people and it's not like it's hurting anyone lmao

Hallmark holidays, heavily promoted by MSM. Yet another tax on "the slaves"they are brainwashed into buying into willingly.
Just enjoy your time with family. Everything else about holidays is nonsense.
Fwiw, fathers day appears to have evolved from St Joseph's day, to celebrate Jesus's earthly father.
If you don't want your holiday can I have it? I would love one.

Lighten up, Francis,...holidays are for having fun
This isn't a dress rehearsal
Sorry, Sir, but you are celebrating holidays...wrong.
Suggestion: do yourself a favor and read
The Battle for Christmas: A Social and Cultural History of Our Most Cherished Holiday

It will change your life for the better. Dare you.
Christmas? Easter? Get back to your Bible. Others are manmade holidays, or political holidays. You can participate or not.

Yuuup
There is Lev 23:39… And i think a little Rom 12:15…

Sorry, don't quite understand. It is my understanding that the Old Testament IS part of the Bible. YMMD
Christmas trees?
Jeremiah 10:1-49
1 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Ishtar eggs?

It's all about separating us from our money.
