Many decades ago I wanted to study before taking the written for a CDL.
I went to a DMV office in SoCal and asked for a Commercial Driver Handbook. They had none in English.

Did you scroll down far enough to reach the "exceptions" section? Section B? The part that I'm sure ABSOLUTELY NOBODY takes advantage of and completely exploits?
Still, nowhere does it say is a "LAW" to learn english. It says there's a section that tests your english comprehension that one might need to become a citizen. Then there's a giant list of exceptions.

Yes I read all of it. You are correct. The meme is partially true, but the exceptions somewhat negate the premise. As is the case with most of our federal "laws".

Because we have birthright citizenship. So illegal alien from Mexico sneaks across the border to give birth, weighs anchor baby when gets deported with kid (or moves back home) and now-18yo-citizen moves back to us (can because citizen) but only speaks Spanish.
Birthright citizenship should only apply if both parents are citizens, to be honest.
This of course complicates relationships that start between people of two differing countries, however we already seem to grant expediency to those circumstances to begin with.
Further additions to such a provision could include a retroactive application whereby the child becomes a citizen if the spouse does.
It's not the easiest thing to resolve, and cutting it entirely creates a lot of visible problems that will detract from fixing it, but it's clear that something needs to change.
I would also add that federal law should be changed such that you have to be a citizen for, say, ten years before granted the ability to vote or run for any legal office.

Good question. I also wonder why so many recorded automated messages always put Spanish first. In 1990 I was a zero telephone operator for GTE. That was the very beginning of automation which they tried force us use for our intro. and I despised it and usually tried NOT to use it, especially since I found it less personal and took much longer as it didn’t kick in for about five seconds and we were times by a minimum of 100 calls per hour. I found I could take 120 calls by not using it and still provide personal assistance. They didn’t care.
Why would they even vote?! If they don’t know the language of a country, they don’t know the politics, especially enough to risk it all just to “vote” for something they can’t understand. The president of the United States of America apparently can be chosen to run a country by them but American citizens have to jump through hoops to obtain a firearm / gun for protection. Something is wrong.

Oh yeah, the IRS has paper forms in their office in probably 25 different languages. Got to get those taxes paid. The bloated behemoth government can't pork out without their pork.
I don't like taxes any more than the next patriot, but if you work here you sure as shit best pay taxes like the rest of us (whether you're here on an H1B visa or you're here without a visa). Gotta pay the piper.
Even if we were to abolish taxes, I still think that anyone who comes to this country to work and doesn't become a citizen should be subject to taxation for the privilege and opportunity.

American employers can pay for their American English lessons, given by American English speaking teachers. Then see how much they save by hiring foreigners.
People who learn "English" in their home countries go through this---
1.) Someone there learns English, but speaks it with an accent.
2.) That person then teaches English with an accent.
3.) Some of those students become English teachers, with the accent they learned, but now have even more of an accent!
4.) Repeats step 3 until nobody can understand WHAT the hell they're saying.
Then you call Customer Service or Support to get some accurate information quickly, and all you get is gibberish....

It was necessary when California became a state and there was a Spanish population of about a few thousand that resided there. The state constitution was written and printed in both languages.
So, Spanish, Navajo and other native American languages should be okay in just those states. Everything else can fuck off. Vietnamese? Cantonese? Hindi? Uh no. It's absurd to even play devils advocate

Why does English matter so much? It's not even yours you stole it from us. The clue is in the name of the language.
I thought America was built by brave hard working individuals from all over the globe, Germany, Holland, Ireland. Why not acknowledge their heritage and language also?
One of the resident’s in chief ‘accomplishments’ is that he made the citizenship test easier to pass.
I have know idea what changes were made. It would be wonderful if someone on here could enlighten us.
