We are literally "chattel" to them. The license is like a merger document.

Well let's see. The county requires strong ID from both parties. A record is kept on file. Can't marry someone else. Maybe mostly to give legitimacy to children. You know who (legally) is the father and the mother. The kids would also know who the grandparents are. Helps in divorce cases. Personally, I don't like chaos and that's what we would have. I do believe it gives kids a sense of stability and security, which is of major importance to kids. I wouldn't mind 2 husbands but..... in my dreams!

Why do people with mortgages get a property tax mortgage deduction, but if you pay off your mortgage you no longer get the deduction but pay more in property taxes?

What other people are missing here is what marriage actually is, the joining of man and women who will then start a family. Marriage is firstly a religious thing, and a tax/government thing second.
