he was never a leftard. 80 years +/- speaking truth.
Yeah OP's title has me scratching my head a little bit
i was too flip, he's one smart dude. But i do recall him admitting to buying into the party line.
He was socialist until college, but reversed course. He is one of the great minds of our time.
He was a socialist until he became an adult? I think it's fair to say he was never a leftist. I don't count what I thought about anything when I was 16.
he was hired by a university right out of college, they called him back and told him they couldn't hire him because the university wanted someone black.
Arguably the smartest man alive
He most certainly was.
He's spoken very openly about it many times.
I don't get your title. You don't like Sowell? The man is literally a genius.
Quite the contrary. I meant it to mean that a liberal can turn into such a great thinker once they come around.
Glad to see Sowell getting love here. Truly a good person and a great thinker.
He's on here almost every other day. We love him here. You must be new.
Ok, handshake.
Europede here. All I seem to see of Mr Sowell is sloganeering soundbites, there must be more to him than memes. What books of his should I read to get a better idea of him?
Any. No, I'm not being flippant or edgy. The man puts out quality in every aspect, be it truth of slavery, economics, politics, you name it; he has extremely insightful thoughts, historical comparison/facts, and conclusions on all of it. I've learned or filled in gaps of my own knowledge just by listening or reading his works.
I would recommend choosing the topic then seeking out his books on that topic via bookseller, amazon, or the like. No, I don't like amazon either but sometimes they have what you cannot find so I bite the bullet, as the saying goes.
I want to echo this 1,000%; also not snarky / sarcastic. ๐๐๐ป๐ฅโก๐ค๐๐ป
Literally pick up ANY of his books that sound interesting to you, and you will be richly rewarded.
The man is amazing!
He's been out publicly fighting leftism in all its forms since the 80s. The guy is more of a conservative than most of us.

He has a YouTube channel
Thomas Sowell TV
So many great videos. He has videos regarding the slave trade as well that are just mind blowing. Things I never heard, read, or learned about in school. He is a national treasure.
It's unfortunate that anything pithy, punchy, and loaded with truth can get casually labeled as sloganeering, a/k/a talking points, and then easily dismissedโeven if that was not your intention in this case.
After all, if something spoken is smart, substantive and insightful, so much that people are "talking" about it, that's kind of the "point" of saying it to begin with.
I absolutely love Thomas Sowell!
I'm being a potato right now; can you ELI5 how inflation transfers wealth from The People to the govt specifically?
I thought it was a wealth transfer in general from people to elite, but the gov specifically?
More info is appreciated.
Thanks!
The corporate bailouts in 2008 (or was it 2009) made me so mad! I was able to download a list of all the companies that included the "net worth" of the companies, and the amount they received in the bailouts. On average, it was just a few percent of the "net worth" of the companies. The companies could have EASILY raised that money from selling off assets! Yes, it would have hurt them a little, but instead, they got all of the rest of us to bail them out. It was disgusting!
IMO it's just another way for the gov to keep their thumb on the scale. But the normie answer is that they are a debtor themselves and they still benefit through tax collection. The man himself explains it somewhere but i'm not finding his deeper darker explanation of inflation offhand.
Free to Choose by Milton Friedman

that vid is so old there was rational intellectual engagement in there.
IIRC Sowell is Milton Friedman's protege. This video series broke through all of my preconceived economic notions.
yeah i really need to set aside some time and absorb it.
Ever see Milton Friedman vs Donahue?
This is one of my favorite exchanges. Just knocks down the arguments and explains things so simply..,in a genial way.
Freidman on Donahue:What IS Greed
FYI Donahue was the predecessor to Oprah Winfrey. Daytime (afternoon) talk show...but certainly no Jerry Springer.
I've heard Mr. Sowell discuss his early adulthood when he was a Leftist.
He said when he started doing research, with an open mind, that he realized everything he had been told about the Left and the government was a lie.
It was further cemented when he presented his findings, which were not the results the institution was looking for, his research was outright ignored because it didn't fit the narrative.
That was the beginning of his journey to becoming a conservative.
Mr. Sowell is absolutely brilliant.
And quite right he is, but he left out the a crucial element to that view. It works... until the mob turns on the government and either abolishes it or votes them out. And then there is always the other option... the French Aristocracy never saw it coming either.
They did see it coming, Most of the Aristocracy fled and came back after Napoleon was defeated. the more liberal of the Aristocracy who were on the side of the people and called for reforms were the ones who lost their heads.
You're right, I was just making a point.
and your right also! ๐
Its why they fight DEflation tooth and nail.
I've said it more than once, it's demonstrably true. And like Reagan who switched and JFK who didn't he's done great things for our country and it's people. Maybe that's not why the mods are down on you.
