More fun facts, Washington was appointed commander of the Continental Army in 1775, and several battles were fought well before the DoI in 1776... for example, Bunker Hill. Those who truly wanted to understand the timeline, need to look further back into history

My grandmother was the president of the DAR in Studio City, California, she did a full genealogy on our family, and we are actually related to George Washington! I wear that badge proudly! Genealogy. Follow the records. Ancestry has images of millions of original records, plus newspapers, books, and trees done by other people. But you have to watch those trees. I'm a professional, and I've seen very few trees out of thousands that didn't have egregious errors. There's also the Mormon site, FamilySearch.
One of my uncles way back in the 1800s was a Washington and a cousin of George Washington.
When my grandmother did the genealogy, it was all done by paper. She had to do tons of research, and I’m not even sure how she did it all, but she did. Back in the day I think they kept more accurate, paper records, especially through the church, if you were Catholic, but to be perfectly honest, you may have to Google to find out how to do your own research through actual paper records. Best wishes to you on that endeavor. I will say that I’m very grateful that she did that so many years ago, it’s just a great feeling.

Interesting you mentioned that. I've thought of it myself, just not recently. About 22 years ago I came out of a bad first marriage and things were touch and go for a few months, until I met my present wife at a gym. I made one mention of suicide and she freaked out so bad, I have not mentioned it since, and rarely go there.
Now that I am older, I am less impulsive and have learned a lot from her. She has helped me with my autism, PTSD from the Navy, and has allowed me to emotionally mature. I don't think of suicide anymore, but I am saddened by the world. Until I found this board, I was wandering, looking for meaning, trying to understand things. Q finally helped me do that.
My biggest thing is that I will die forgotten. I'm okay with that, in a strange way. Like Kansas said, "we're all just dust in the wind."

Not to take away from Washington's success at holding out against the British in the North, but the war was more accurately won in the South, in particular at King's Mountain and Cowpens. Without these Patriot victories which forced Cornwallis to flee the Carolinas (where he massively overestimated the level of Tory sentiment) for the "safety" of Virginia, Yorktown never happens... the Patriots also won the intelligence war, in part due to Washington's leadership, but moreso the Culper Ring and Benjamin Tallmadge.
A relative of mine was living in the house in Germantown at the time where Washington directed the battle from the front steps.

When I am feeling discouraged I think about Washington pinned against the bank of the river, forced into the decision to either cross it or face the British. With a ragtag group of hungry boys and young men serving him and other branches of the military refusing to cooperate. With some of the locals hating him for commandeering their commercial boats. With other locals supporting him and the cause. The difficulties he faced in knowing who to rely on, who to trust.
