Some of the guys I know that were in on this were doing it to see reactions. ANY reactions. Because it isn't really a hoax it people are doing it for the reasons of virtue signaling. I saw lots of actual wp people taking it up because, why not? If I went up to them and said making this or that random symbol means wp, then even if I made it up and they still took it and passed it on, it wouldn't be a hoax. It would be a meme. Memetics. In group, outgroup virtue signaling. Obviously wp isn't a classical "virtue" but that's not what signalling is really about. For example there are many catch phrases in the MAGA movement that are repeated simply for the purpose of signaling "I'm one of you". I really dislike it for some reason. Rubs me the wrong way.
But it would be a fundamental misunderstanding of the chans if one thinks they are always on one side or another. People doing it, or talking about it, or discussing how it's wrong or right, either side, is the goal.
