I suppose that could be true for a 12 year old at the time. I would hope as a mature adult she would have reflected on it and gained the courage to speak about the evil rather than laugh about it. Larry King, who was not personally involved in her situation also laughed about it. He is trained to maintain his emotions, no matter the subject, and its one of the reasons he was a good interviewer. He laughed too. The mom also appeared to have laughed off that she was taken by surprise sexually, and as a mother, she missed a moment to show leadership to her daughter.
In the end, the fame and money was worth it to both of them to deal with sexual advances. That may be the case for most in Hollywood. The predators know it. People sell their souls for fame and fortune far too often and for far too little.

Enabling abusers continues abuse as well. Not sure how many viewers King had, but I suspect the laughing softened the crime. Laughing it off that both studios were bad, "they all do it," seems to me to be an enabling mechanism.
The alternative could have been addressing the sick predatory behavior that drives Hollywood. Having done so would have probably ended both King's career and negatively impacted Shirley.
It's all easy for me to say because it's not my fame or fortune on the line. This was a different time where such things were not spoken of. Maybe because of that, this was actually a big deal at the time. It seems miniscule now, as we are used to hearing so much worse now.
I think a big take away from The Great Awakening is that we have tremendous evil in our midst, and its always been there. It's a fight between good and evil.
As the world is more and more connected and power centers can ripple through civilation at the speed of light, we need to be prepared for today's battles and the battles yet to come.
People need to choose their side and stand their ground. Do we want to stand for good or evil? The choice is binary and the war is real.
One thing I would say is that laughter is a coping mechanism for some to deal with dark or tragic shit. It's certainly possible, though maybe unlikely, that they were both responding like this, or that one of them one and the other was following suit.
Though they should also try and push their feelings aside and remain professional seeing as they're broadcasting themselves to the world talking about this stuff. And give it the seriousness it deserves.

Back then, discussing anything controversial or taboo was strictly forbidden. It was probably a breathtaking thing to hear back in the day and may have had a real impact on viewers.
As you say, the laughing may have been a way to soften such an attack on hollywood.
The fact that she was on CNN talking to Larry King about the experience is telling enough. Many people, even having been in the lion’s den, aren’t able to see how deep the corruption really goes. Sad.

Not sure I saw the one you've linked (probably did), but if it's the one where they talk about how Shirley Temple's dresses were always short, and even shorter in the back, and how her films seemed to revolve around a little girl surrounded by men, yeah, it's an eye opener. I also saw the Baby Burlesque ones on youtube. Disgusting is an understatement.
They both seemed to think this was really funny. To me, that's just as disgusting as the acts that occurred.
