I'm really starting to think this balloon story is Comms.
It's such a nothing-burger on its face. What could they seriously hope to discover from a balloon that will have any more influence than a spy jet flying overhead?

I understand her frustration. But the truth is, a bullet shot from the ground cannot reach a balloon flying at 66,000 ft altitude.
All that shooting bullets straight up in the air would do is create a hazard of piercing bullets dropping from the sky at 150 mph, possibly damaging buildings, cars, people and animals. Bad idea!
And, as many of us have been saying, if the balloon is a weapon, could it house pathogens, viruses, or fentanyl? If so, puncturing it would release these toxins into the upper atmosphere, carrying them across wide reaches of the U.S.
We were discussing this at work last night and someone wondered if maybe this balloon was a test to see how passive the american public has become/how capable they are of taking matters into their own hands when the government refuses.
If the american citizenry finds a way to shoot that shit down, clearly they need to demoralize/disarm us even further. If we all just accept its up there and we can't do anything about it, then that's a green light for them to proceed with normalizing letting these things into our airspace.
Last time I heard, it was 60,000 ft up, ~12 miles. Good luck trying to get that one with a hunting rifle.
As for why to shoot it down? I suspect this is purely symbolic. Wait, what? You read correctly. We've had satellites that can take clear pictures of your license plate from low earth orbit for 2 decades. More to the point, the minute the Soviets shot down the U-2 spy plane over Russia in 1960, the military learned that if they want to hide things on military bases, put them in buildings or underground. This is part of the origin of DUMBs. There is nothing that balloon is going to see that China can't already see from space. And even if it did see something we'd jam its transmissions and they'd still have no joy.
Spying relies on subtlety and stealth. If you want to spy and get away with it, you don't float a big ass balloon into airspace protected by the world's most advanced radars.
This is about something else? What exactly is China up to? I have no idea. But it isn't what the Pentagon is hinting at or what any of the talking heads are yammering about to fill air time on their talk shows.

Or explosives. One general said they couldn't shoot it down due to it hurting people on the ground. That's BS, because rural Montana is sparsely populated. Thus exactly why the nuclear missiles are there. What if these bastards are armed and can't be removed without severe damage? Virus, or otherwise?
Pretty sure the highest flying airliners these days can only fly at around 45,000 feet. There's no way a small plane is making it anywhere near that thing. It would lose lift because the air is so much less dense that high.

A) Stock market. I noticed it swell Thursday and nearly deflate today (Friday)
B) Real estate. It swelled the past few years. No one I know is able to sell, so may soon pop
C) Interest rates on everything grew like crazy, now stagnant, maybe ready to pop?
D) Gas/Oil.
E) Basically anything at the grocery store

This balloon is the black hat's 'slow drip' for us to accept surveillance and control from global entities.
It 'alerts' us (it's China!), but it's relatively 'harmless' (a balloon).
But the natural progression (eventually) leads to:

Theres alot of amateur pilots with small planes that could head up and shoot off a coupler of darts.
