Under the guise of his imaginary spokesperson “John Barron,” Trump insisted to the press that “the merit of these stones was not enough to justify the effort to save them,” and said that the $32,000 cost of removing the art, coupled with a weeklong delay in the building’s demolition, outweighed what he claimed was the $9,000 (apiece) value of the statues. Of course, that’s a negligible fraction of the $15 million dollars Trump spent on the building, never mind the tens of millions more he would eventually pour into his skyscraper.
Besides, citing three supposed appraisals, “Barron” said that the statues were “without artistic merit.” So, take that art-lovers!
Board and staff members at the MET were furious and confused about Baron's claims that the sculptures lacked merit. "Can you imagine the [MET] accepting them if they were not of artistic merit?" asked Ashton Hawkins, a Met board member.
Trumped the firm Kaszycki and Sons to clear the Bonwit Teller site. Kaszycki and Sons was largely a window-washing firm with little experience in demolition.
The whole testy episode started with a promise. Trump, 33 at the time, was tearing down the Bonwit building to make way for Trump Tower. The façade of the 11-story structure, completed in 1929, featured a pair of 15-foot-tall Art Deco panels “depicting stylized, partly draped female nudes,” according to the Times. The Met wanted them, and Trump said the museum could have them, so long as the cost of removal wasn’t prohibitive.
And yet, without warning, Trump’s demolition crew destroyed the sculptures.
Approximately twice every year, Trump contacted Bonwit Teller's parent company, Genesco, to ask whether they were willing to sell Bonwit Teller's flagship store. Trump said the first time he contacted Genesco, "they literally laughed at me."[72] Genesco continued to decline his offers and, according to Trump, "they thought I was kidding.
In 1977, John Hanigan became the new chairman of Genesco.[73] He looked to sell off some assets to pay debts, and Trump approached him with an offer to buy the Bonwit Teller building.[74] In February 1979, Genesco sold off many of the Bonwit Teller locations to Allied Stores, and sold the brand's flagship building to the Trump Organization
There's that Astor connection again. "...which was really a Rothschild building" but was also previously an Astor property.
And the "built-in" comms: Bonwit Teller designed by Warren & Wetmore. Warren = rabbit den, and with Alice and Wonderland as a rabbity backdrop, Wetmore can be surmised. Bonwit Teller of course sounds like a sharp-witted banker, just the stamp the cabal would want to place over the property of a vanquished rival.
Nice ties, Semper! The other recent posts as well.
There was a thread in GAW a couple weeks ago suggesting that Trump was an Astor. If that is the case, it would make this tug-of-war even more personal as the Rothschild snatched the property from them, and they took it back.
The book offers a fictional account of life in the year 2000. It contains abundant speculation about technological invention, including descriptions of a worldwide telephone network, solar power, air travel, space travel to the planets Saturn and Jupiter, and terraforming engineering projects — damming the Arctic Ocean, and an adjustment of the axial tilt of the Earth
Jupiter proves to be a jungle world, with flesh-eating plants, vampire bats, giant snakes and mastodons, and flying lizards. The Americans discover a wealth of exploitable resources: iron, silver, gold, lead, copper, coal, and oil.
Saturn, in contrast, is an ancient world of silent spirits. These beings provide the explorers with foresight of their own deaths. One of the spirits, a deceased bishop, tells the voyagers about the icy world Cassandra, which orbits the Sun beyond Neptune and is home to the souls of unworthy Earthlings.
Talk about a curveball. Who would have expected him to write something like this?
I'm seeing the Astor's being quite the players, and they have always had a place in my heart as true American Entrepreneurs. That's why Ol' JP Morgan wanted them out of the equation. They weren't down with central banking.
Wow, wow, wow! The Tiffany “Blue box” that Melania gave to Micheal might have more meaning here. Looks like Trump has had a cat fight with the Tiffany and Co. brand since the 1970s. I knew the blue box had symbolism to it (what’s inside the box?) - obviously - but I wonder if it’s tied to Trump’s history with the Jewelry company as well?
There was a post not too long ago claiming Trump to be a descendent of the Astor bloodline who, like Kennedy, is fighting back against the other families. If that's the case then this story is of Trump reclaiming his family's property, just like how we will reclaim our country.
Man a whole book that goes DEEP into these wealthy bloodlines and their secret wars over generations and their impact on world history would be a really interesting read
This great and in 1980 I remember Mr.Nadeler was the NY City manager at the time of purchase and tried to stop the purchase of that building to Trump interesting indeed
I have done the hike to Monte Cristo on old Mountain Loop Hwy in Washington. It is long but beautiful and would still be a great place to hole up and start over if ever a war. It is beautiful, hidden with an old mine and two raging freshwater mountain creeks surrounded by heavily timbered forest in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Original road in has been washed out several years back but new one could be made. Some buildings still stand and old cemetary above town is still there.

"Completed in the fall of 1983 Trump Tower is no equal in class and style to the old Stewart / Bonwit Building at 721 5th Avenue."
Wrohng.

nice. really sheds light on the statue wrecking and building stupidity of the last several years.
Impressive as ever, SemperSupra.

Astor had planned to finance Teslas world wireless sytem..... Imagine how radically different the 20th century would have been if that went ahead.
Maybe thats the curveball, his heirs mount a comeback and revolutionize the 21st century. Ha… a long shot, I know.
Did you that John Jacob Astor IV (who died on the titanic) wrote a Science Fiction novel?

Now that is something. Trump has already stepped on the elite's toes and removed one of their creepy buildings with their symbolism on it.
Interesting that trolled them, too.
Sounds just like the Trump we know and love!
