This is purely hindsight, but it's become clear to me that Desantis is the perfect example of a career politician;
become a lawyer (JAG in this case)
military experience (optional)
work from small-time bureaucrat up to elected office, then pipeline to higher and higher office
copy what other people do that seems to work/maybe do it to another level (covid lockdowns in both directions, immigration) usually, though not always to the point of failure
focus group, focus group, focus group
avoid making decisions that rock the boat too much
